frown-fighting superhero, Cap- tain Encouragement, will share his message of positivity all four days of the fair. Captain Encouragement’s goal of perpetuating positive change in the world teaches kids how to solve real-life issues without violence. His superpow- ers are “infections positivity and the ability to encourage people to do their best and spread kindness,” according to the Cap- tain Encouragement website. Other free activities at the fair will include cider tasting by Indigeny and dance demonstra- tions.

The Inter- national Brotherhood of Magi- cians have called his magic tricks “incredible!”

In addition to the washed and trimmed show-ready pigs in the livestock barn, a passel of pigs will rev up their engines to race for spectators. Charlie Cook of Cook’s Racing Pigs and his four pot-bellied pigs have performed at the Mother Lode Fair in the past to the delight of spectators. The four little pigs race 90 feet around a horseshoe-shaped course and are rewarded with vanilla ice cream and a cookie at the end. Spectators can bet, for free, on which pig will win, and winners receive a shirt that says “My Pig Won,” a hat or a blue ribbon. When not racing, the pigs are housed in a custom-built trailer that Cook calls the “Bacon Barn.” Cook comes froma pig-raising family and showed pigs in 4-Hand FFA as a child and teen.He quit a job as a fire sprinkler fitter in 1993 to take his show on the road full time. Races will be held at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and at 4, 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
