FAIR THEME

Written in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is considered America’s first homegrown fairy tale. This much-loved story has a special connection to San Diego. While crafting the Oz series of books, author L. Frank Baum escaped the cold winters in his Midwest home by vacationing in Southern California, often staying at the Hotel del Coronado and visiting the La Jolla shoreline. Baum designed the regal chandeliers that give the Del’s famous ballroom it’s name, “The Crown Room,” and it is

said the Hotel Del’s castle-like architecture inspired the towers of his fictitious “Emerald City.” Three books in the Oz series took shape here in San Diego, including Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz 1908, The Road to Oz 1909, and The Emerald City 1910.
