The Plainview High School softball program won its second state championship in the last three seasons with a 14-4 victory over Opp in the 2023 Class 3A State Finals. The Lady Bears capped off a remarkable 47-1 season that included just one loss. “These girls work so hard,” said Plainview coach Jeff Brooks. “It’s good to see these girls succeed.” Plainview’s roster includes only two seniors, Mia Tidmore and Lily Boswell, who was the winning pitcher. “This has been our goal,” said Tidmore who was named the Class 3A State Tournament MVP. In the championship game, Mia hit a double with two outs in the fifth inning to score Ali Price from first base. Overall, the Bears scored at least one run in all five innings. Plainview’s Chloe Hatch had two RBIs singles, while Tidmore had two doubles and a single. Plainview freshman Faith Odom hit a solo homer.

Plainview defeated the Bobcats earlier in the winner’s bracket finals by a scored of 4-2. In that game, the Lady Bears did all of their scoring in the top of the second inning, getting four runs off two triples, a single and a pair of RBI groundouts. Mia Tidmore was 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Bears. Abby Williams also drove in two

runs with a triple of her own. Lily Boswell got the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings. She allowed two runs off six hits with 10 strikeouts. Abby Williams, Boswell and Tidmore were named to the 2023 Class 3A All-Tournament Team. They were joined by Amaya Womack, Allie Wisner and Reese Cauley, all of Opp.

Fort Payne Wins Class 6A State Soccer Championship

The Fort Payne High Boy's Soccer program battled from behind three times in the 2023 AHSAA Class 6A soccer championship. The effort helped the Wildcats pick up a 4-3 win over Montgomery Academy. Fort Payne forward Cristian Barrientos finished with three goals and a hat trick to earn Class 6A MVP honors. Each of his goals came at a clutch time for the Wildcats. Montgomery Academy (21-3-1) took a quick 1-0 lead eight minutes into the match. Barrientos made it 1-1 seven minutes later with goal set up by an assist from Chris Rocha Luna. School Varsity

Both teams traded scores, before Montgomery Academy eventually took a 3-2 lead in at halftime with a goal by Lucas Rizzo. The Wildcats (26-2- 2), coached by Michael Farmer, tied the match seven minutes into the second half on a kick by Rafael Robles, which was set up by Barrientos’ assist. Barrientos gave Fort Payne the lead at the 58:19 mark to complete his hat trick. The Wildcats defense shut out the Eagles the rest of the way. Over the past couple of months The Sports Ledger has announced our 2023 Ledger Leader awards, which has recognized several outstanding Northeast Alabama student athletes. This month we would like to recognize two additional student athletes from Guntersville High School. They are juniors Kendall Teall and Manuel Patino Castillo. Kendall is a basketball and softball standout at Guntersville and she has a perfect 4.0 academic GPA. In 2022, Kendall was recognized for having the highest Math, English, and Science averages. She has been a member of the Academic Top 10 for the past three years at Guntersville. Additionally, Kendall has served as a GHS Marshal for three years. She is a member of the National Honors Society, an SGA representative (3 years), and she was named Miss Leo Club. Her other activities include Junior Civitans, Interact Club, FCA, ODK, and the SADD Club. In addition to her academic accomplishments, Kendall has spent time Speaking at the "Partners in Education Breakfast" for the Education and Training Program. She has also helped with various community service projects including Special Olympics, Back to School Shopping, Junior Civitan’s Pumpkin Patch, St. Jude’s bracelets, GES Fall Festival, and Blessing’s in a backpack. Kendall has numerous athletic Awards in basketball. In 2022 she was a member of the Guntersville Lady Wildcats State Championship team. She also helped Guntersville win the 2022 Regional Championship. The soon to be Wildcat senior, has been a part of three straight Marshall County and Area Championships, as the Guntersville varsity girls won the titles in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Additionally, Kendall also earned the Student-Athlete Award in all three seasons. Cale Black has been hired as the head boys basketball coach at Plainview High School. Black has been the head coach at Boaz for the past four seasons. He previously spent 11 years at Geraldine and two years at Plainview (2002-04) as varsity boys coach. He was also an assistant at Plainview for Robi Coker from 2018-19. Coker resigned from Plainview to become the head coach at Fort Payne. By Brandon K. Pierce The Sports Ledger Two Guntersville Junior Athletes Have 4.0 GPA's Manuel also has a perfect 4.0 GPA and he has participated in the Wildcat's Indoor and Outdoor Track and field program for the past two seasons.

During his 10th grade season, Manuel set a personal record of 59.17 seconds in the 400 meter dash and a personal record of 26.35 seconds in the 200 meter dash. During his junior season, he recorded a Personal Record of 12.93 seconds in the 100 meter dash. Manuel is also active in the JROTC program and he earned numerous honors during his Freshman year. He received the Distinguished Cadet Award for Scholastic Excellence, which is an annual award to a Cadet who exhibits the highest degree of excellence in scholastics. He also received the Academic Excellence Award, which is given to a Cadet in each LET level for maintaining highest school academic grades. Manuel was also award the Good Conduct Ribbon, which is an annual award presented to the Cadets who have demonstrated outstanding conduct and participation. He also earned an Academic Achievement Wreath, which is a Gold wreath that goes on the Uniform. Manuel has also been active in Marshall County Youth Leadership initiatives. He has visited with a local a nursing home, where he played games with the elderly, served lunch, and played games. He also spent time shopping for Christmas gifts for kids in need. Additionally, during his junior year Manuel participated in the Envision Program, which is a week-long leadership summer camp in which they taught principles of making a start-up company such as, networking, budgeting, elevator pitches, team working, and other skills. At Guntersville, Manuel is an SGA Representative, a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, a member of the Health Occupation Students of America, a Public Speaking Competitor, and a member of the Math Team. He has also received Junior Reserve Officers' Training.
