CURRENT COMMENT (Continued from Page 208) WHY THE APPALLING INCREASE OF CRIME? It is estimated by expert statisicians that crimes cost America now annu ally three billion dollars. These do not include crimes of violence, but stock frauds, embezzlements, burglar ies, forgeries, thefts of various kinds; twenty-two companies insuring against embezzlements and burglaries report increase of embezzlements from 1910, one million three hundred thousand dollars to 1921, eight million and over; in burglaries 1910 less than a million to 1921, eleven and a half mil lions! Other crimes bring the total money loss as above to three billion dollars, half a billion more than our total imports. These fearful totals and the rapid increases annually surely require im mediate, moral and spiritual taking of stock account. If George Washington was right in saying that morals will not long survive religion, then any loosening of religious safeguards or sanctions will show speedily in rising waves of crime. It was so in Wash ington’s own day in the awful excesses of wickedness following the ascend ency of Tom Paine and French athe ism after the Revolution. It had plunged France into hellish atrocities and horrors. It has since brought Germany to moral chaos and the World War. And in all history no facts are plainer than that crime rises and falls with the power or the col lapse of the Christian religion. Liberalism in the church must be held largely responsible for waves of crime in the nation. For liberalism today attacks the ethics of the Bible and even of Christ as yesterday it as sailed the doctrines it teaches. In Germany the descent was swift from Strauss and Wellhausen to Nietzsche and Bernhardi, and it is being re peated in America. Abolishing hell in the future lets it loose in the pres ent.— Eastern Methodist. DR. MUNHALL RAPS THE METH ODIST BOOK CONCERN Our Book concern did a business last year of over $5,000,000.
