the fundraising campaigns with only a part- time administrative staffer. They were in dire need of direction and they saw inDensmore the perfect candidate for the job. She arrived at her new office on Main Street in Hawkesbury on the August 19, 2014. The office was small and dusty with no accessible bathrooms. She realised that going froman emergency response position to this job would be a tough adjustment for her. But after mingling with the different organizations United Way supports, and other influential individuals in the area, she quickly came to the realization that there is a lot to be done when it comes to food security and aid as a whole in Prescott-Rus- sell. Densmore also figured out that all the organizations that UnitedWay supports have access to data about the communities they serve. That data could be better gathered and analyzed in order to pinpoint issues and eventually solutions. Her job requested that shemanaged pre- established fundraising campaigns, but she knew that a lot more could be done through her position. So she started tackling projects such as raising awareness about the 211 number, a phone number that people in difficult situations can call to receive help. She also started, with the help of a Concordia student, researching on the youth homeles- sness phenomenon in Prescott-Russell and food deserts. Food deserts are places in Pres- cott-Russell where there is no available food source, such as a grocery store nearby. This means that people with low income and di- sabilities who can’t access a grocery store on foot spend as much on travel than on food. United Way of Prescott Russell under Densmore Before her arrival, UnitedWay of Prescott Russell held galas to raise money for the organizations it supports. But when Dens- more made the math, she figured out that organizing a gala takes so many resources that “at the end of the day it’s just not worth it”. What really works are the governmental employees direct contributions out of their paychecks, major banks programs and LCBO campaigns where employees ask the public to donate when they buy their products. The issue with the latter method is that some people believe that they are financing the lavish lifestyle of United Way’s employees and in Prescott Russell’s case, the employee is Densmore herself. Giving to CHEO is pretty clear, you are helping children. But in United Way’s case, it’s harder to explain to the populace what exactly they do.This is Densmore’s major battle that she needs to wage. As for her lavish lifestyle, she explai-

ned, “Last year we amassed 200,000$, 20 per cent can be used for administrative fees which includes rent for the office, printing, part of the summer student salaries andmy salary.” Laughing, she ended with, “So no, I do not live on a yacht.” Jodie Densmore, who is pregnant with her second child, will be leaving on maternity leave soon; she will be hiring a fundraising specialist to replace her during her absence. Her passion for her work and the well-being of vulnerable people in Prescott-Russell is contagious. No, Prescott-Russell is not a warzone, but we have many battles to win; battles against food insecurity, youth ho- melessness, elder isolation and more. We can thank Jodie Densmore for taking on such a task. We now have a warrior and humanitarian to help fight our battles.
