Be Sure Your Finances Are in Order! Traveling Abroad This Summer?

Happy May everyone! I’ve continued to update our website with information about various nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home health care agencies and featuring these agencies in our newsletter. This month, I interviewed Heather Hamilton (Admission Director) with Adams Lanes Healthcare & Rehabilitation. I interviewed Heather nearly four years ago, and it was time for an update! Adams Lane provides rehabilitation & therapy services, skilled nursing, memory care, long-term care, and hospice and palliative care. During our interview, Kim described the facility, what services are offered, social activities and more.

As we quickly approach summer, more and more vacation destinations are preparing for travelers to visit their shops, restaurants, and rentals. However, it’s also best for you to begin preparing — especially if you’re traveling internationally. Before heading overseas, it’s crucial that your finances are in order so you can spend less time worrying about your money and more time immersing yourself in a new culture. When venturing abroad, it’s important to understand what type of currency you will be using. I’ve had several clients who didn’t know where to begin when organizing their finances for their trip. To help you with your planning, I created a checklist of everything you should do before boarding the plane and entering vacation mode.

Traveling Abroad Financial Checklist

Please visit our website to watch the interview:

1. Notify your debit and credit card companies. Have you ever bought something and had your financial institution notify you of a suspicious purchase? This can and will happen to you when you’re visiting another country. Your debit or credit card company may freeze your account if they notice any suspicious transactions — even if it’s you making the purchases! To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, contact your financial institution over the phone or in your online portal, and outline what days you will be out of the country. By doing this, your purchases will not be flagged as fraudulent.

3. Get travel insurance. Your bank provider will have different travel insurance options that can cover the cost of unexpected expenses. Depending on your card issuer, travel insurance can protect you from additional fees for delayed or missed flights, baggage issues, and some trip expenses. Essentially, travel insurance is designed to protect you against any risks or financial losses. When activating your travel insurance, be sure you review the specific terms and reach out to your bank with questions or concerns. 4. Consider a no-foreign-fee credit card. Many credit cards have usage fees for charges in other countries. This can inflate the cost of your transactions, but there are some ways around it. You may want a no-foreign-fee credit card to use during your trip. If you are booking flights, eating at restaurants, hitting the shops, or staying in a hotel or rental overseas, you can use this card to cover your expenses without additional fees. No matter where you’re traveling to this summer, I wish you and your family a safe trip! I look forward to hearing about your experience and the memories you created with your loved ones.

Furthermore, it’s best to have your debit or credit card accounts on your phone for easy access. That way, you will always be able to enter your account and track your purchases to ensure everything is correct. 2. Have different forms of payment. In today’s world, there are various payment options to choose from — Paypal, CashApp, Venmo, by card, or cash. Some shops may only take cash or payment in their currency. Because of this, it’s best to have multiple forms of payment handy. When converting dollars to other currencies, there are a few ways to do it. You can use an ATM in the country you’re visiting, but this can lead to additional stress and confusion.

Instead, you can visit your local bank before your trip to exchange currencies or visit a currency exchange office at the airport. Before converting your money, ask about additional fees involved with your exchange.

How to Make Coffee While You Camp BEST WAYS TO BREW IN THE WILD

Cowboy Coffee The epitome of “no-nonsense,” cowboy coffee requires only a pot, water, and ground coffee. All you need to do is boil some water, add the coffee grounds, wait until they sink to the bottom, and enjoy! With a rich, robust flavor, cowboy coffee may not be the best option for casual frappuccino drinkers. Yet, it provides a good cup of joe for those sleeping under the stars. AeroPress Coffee When you buy an AeroPress, you get full- bodied coffee whenever your heart desires. If you’re a coffee connoisseur, then you probably already know about AeroPress. Easy to travel with and perfect for outdoor nomads, these fuss-free coffee brewing tools will make any moment in nature even better. Portable Pour-Overs While instant coffee packets are a tried- and-true method, we can all agree that they aren’t the epitome of fine-quality coffee. For the same ease but better taste, try single-serving pour-over coffee. These innovative products consist of a paper pour-over stand that perfectly fits on top of a mug. Lightweight and portable, this method gives you a pour-over coffee taste with the convenience of instant coffee. We recommend brands like Kuju and Copper Cow Coffee for their excellent flavors, like bourbon and Vietnamese coffee.

add ground coffee and water to the tube, then press down with the cylinder. Coffee will drip through and have you questioning why you ever spent $7 on a latte. Get your AeroPress from their official website (AeroPress.com) or a big-box store! Don’t let the ruggedness of the outdoors ever stop you from enjoying a nice, smooth cup of coffee. You can bring your favorite caffeine fix to forest trails, mountaintops, and sandy shores.

Comfort in an Emergency

WHY YOU NEED A POWER OF ATTORNEY

Before designating an agent, consider whom you trust with your money and health. Some people might select the same family member to be their financial and health care agents, but others could choose separate individuals. Each situation is different, and you know what’s best for you. While a relative who cares deeply about your well-being may be an ideal health care agent, this person might make a terrible financial agent if they can’t balance a checkbook. Each state has methods for determining who will make decisions for an incapacitated person when they do not have a predesignated power of attorney. But the process is less than ideal. Having to hash out who should be your representative can cause strife within your family when they need each other the most. Further, an incapacitated person no longer has the ability or right to determine who will take on these crucial responsibilities and make monumental decisions about their care, finances, and life. Creating power of attorney documents while you are of sound mind gives you some measure of control over your future. Fortunately, many POAs designations will never take effect, but if the worst happens, you’ll be better off having a power of attorney in place.

Take a Break! A POA gives someone the legal right to act on your behalf. These documents also outline the specific type of decisions the designated agent can undertake and sometimes detail a single event. For example, if you become incapacitated, designating financial power of attorney will allow someone you choose to handle your finances on your behalf, while a health care power of attorney grants someone the right to make decisions about your medical treatment. Estate planning is about much more than determining what will happen to your assets after you pass away. It’s also crucial to plan for medical emergencies. In fact, designating financial and health care powers of attorney (POA) should be an essential component of any estate plan.

see the sights, and fit in as much activity as possible. However, this left travelers completely exhausted. And as our culture continues to understand how important sleep is to our health, more people are prioritizing rest even while they’re away. But being a sleep tourist is about more than going to bed early and ensuring you get your recommended eight hours of rest. It's about building your vacation around sleep. Some hotels even offer rooms tailored to sleep tourists, with amenities so popular that their sleep options have become regular offerings. So, if sleep tourism sounds like something you'd be interested in, here are three hotels that help you catch those z's. Park Hyatt New York (NYC): This hotel features a "Sleep Suite" designed by Bryte, a company that uses AI to facilitate sleep.

The room touts an intuitive "Restorative Bed," which adjusts to relieve pressure points and controls climate temperature throughout the night, according to each person’s needs. This suite also includes an array of soothing essential oils, a diffuser, and books about sleep. The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel (London): This hotel offers a "sleep concierge," which boasts prerecorded sleep meditations and a pillow selection menu for every type of sleeper. Sleepers can even benefit from the hotel’s weighted blankets, scented pillow mist service, and their proprietary sleep tea. Zedwell (London): The first ever "sleep- centric" hotel, Zedwell uses recycled materials to insulate every door, wall, and floor from sound. This hotel also purifies the air within the hotel and fills every space with ambient lighting.

If you've ever planned a vacation, you’ve probably picked a few key places to visit, like a museum, restaurant, or historic site. However, a new vacation trend is becoming increasingly popular: sleep tourism, where a traveler plans their entire vacation to get the best quality sleep during their time away. Before, common goals for vacations were to eat delicious foods, stay up late to
