Welcome to Term 3. The cold has kicked in so please ensure your child is wearing significant layers of undergarments with their school uniform (more on this below). We are all excited, prepared and organised for learning at the College. A full complement of staff is employed to ensure all classes and electives proceed as normal which is an achievement in the current climate of teacher workforce shortages. It is with extreme gratitude that we have Mr Abney - Hastings return to us to resume the key leadership role as Primary Campus Principal. Mr Abney - Hastings was in the Acting Principal position at Norris Bank PS through most of last term. This was a wonderful opportunity for his own professional growth and his experiences at the school will only bring strength and richness to a range of initiatives and programs at our College. As a result, my on - campus times will revert to Monday and Thursday on the Primary Campus, Tuesday and Friday on the Secondary Campus, with alternating Wednesdays. Welcome back to Mrs Fernando from a long bout of illness to resume in the role of Tutor Learning Coach and to Mrs Georgiadis who returns to Year 3 after a Term of Long Service Leave. Mrs Stockley will begin family leave around the beginning of August and she will be replaced by Ms Kelly in Year 3.

students who prepared and conducted themselves with aplomb, many scoring highly in their studies. And a thank you to the teachers and supervisors for their efforts with the organisation and administration of the NAPLAN tests and exams, including the timely assessment and reporting that was completed during the holiday break. All students in Years 10 - 12 should have received their Semester One Student Reports via Compass. If not, please contact the general office for follow up. LEARNER REVIEW MEETINGS: A Learner Review Day is scheduled for August 28 for Secondary students and their families & September 17 for Primary students and their families - please mark this in your diaries and make appointments on Compass when you ’ re advised that appointments are open. There will be no classes on these days at the respective campuses to enable the meetings. It is imperative that you make appointments to discuss your child ’ s learning progress and intent with their learning goals. This is a key aspect of our growing school - family partnership that is critical to enhancing student performance and constructive relationships between students, their teachers and their families. COLLEGE PRIORITIES FOR STUDENTS IN TERM 3: To ensure that we are working together and in tandem at all times, the following practices NEED to be at the forefront of our work to begin Term 3 on our 4 key pillars that are our performance indicators:

marked increase from last year where we enrolled 45 students. We will need to cap the number soon to ensure that we can maintain our philosophy of smaller class sizes. If you know any family who is looking at enrolling from outside our College, please ask them to contact the general office and submit their paperwork as a matter of priority. ENROLMENTS AT OTHER YEAR LEVELS: We have maintained our commitment to restrict enrolments to our catchment area in Semester One so that class sizes and classroom dynamics are not hampered and learning is not compromised. We will open our window for the first two weeks for enrolments and further encourage any prospective families to enrol for the beginning of 2025. If you have a Preppie for next year or know of a family in your circle who is intending to enrol at our College, you are strongly encouraged to submit enrolment forms as soon as possible to enable us to effectively prepare for staffing arrangements. NAIDOC WEEK JULY 7 - 14: This year the theme that the Department of Education focused on was ‘ Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud ’. I wanted to thank the many teachers and students, and their families that celebrated the week. On 1 July 2024, the First Nations Strategy, Policy and Programs group was established. This includes working closely with the Koorie Outcomes Division, and supporting the work of the Koorie Education Workforce and groups across the department to further strengthen our efforts to lift outcomes for First Nations learners. On our recent Principal Field Study to New Zealand schools, both Ms Lee and I were amazed by the prevalence of First Nation authenticity, realness and honesty that we identified as the sustaining themes from our observations. Many questions arose around the purpose, vision, and function of the education system, and metrics to measure success. In particular, how these are differentiated for cultural groups and individual communities and the tension that exists at these intersections. We were inspired to see that school communities were complete as one in their understanding of their true Indigenous origins, were able to confidently perform welcoming Māori ceremonies for us as their guests of honour in a very authentic and inclusive manner, presented us with a gift that depicted their land and connected us to their personal story telling that covered their heritage and rich history. The sacredness of the collective identity at each school we visited was clear and apparent. As a College, we need to be able to identify our College values in addition to our strategic intent and learn to celebrate success in ways which depict the true Indigenous foundations that our College sits on. Our aim is to use the learning and strategies used to acknowledge and celebrate First Nation ’ s history and culture, to build a capacity in our community that truly is inclusive to our local Indigenous heritage. We owe it to our students to develop a shared vision where the culture, knowledge and experience of First Nations peoples are celebrated, our universal service systems are inclusive, responsive and respectful, and every learner achieves their potential, and feels strong in their cultural identity. Have a lovely weekend and as always, thank you for the ongoing support that you give to nurture your child ’ s learning.

Community Connections: Uniform - Learning Coaches will be monitoring student uniform and offering support to ensure that each child's needs around uniform can be met. Families are encouraged to contact Ms Sutton or Ms Watt for uniform supports. Positive Culture for Learning: Punctuality to each and every session is a vital component in student success in the classroom. Teachers will be reestablishing classroom protocols and processes to ensure that learning time is maximised through punctuality. School Pride: Classrooms - Building and grounds works will continue throughout Term 3. The provision of high - quality teaching and learning spaces is of high priority to the College. It is important that students also show care and pride in their spaces by taking care of them. High Expectation: Students will be working with their Learning Coaches and individual teachers to refine their Learning Goals. These goals also set the conditions for differentiated learning and assessment opportunities - critical to a students progression and lifting the academic focus across the College.

Please support our initiative and drive for student success by reinforcing the importance of these practices at home with your children. We will review our performance in Week 6, August 23 which is our Curriculum Day. SYNTHETIC BASKETBALL COURT UPDATE – PRIMARY CAMPUS: Works are continuing on this exciting project. You would have noticed that the topsoil and below ground drainage works are almost complete. The soil needs time to sit, particularly in the wet winter we are experiencing, before the turf is laid. The anticipated completion date is late August at the earliest. We will then need to invest in surrounding landscaping and pathways to avoid mud on the synthetic courts. Thank you for avoiding the enclosed area in the interim. 2025 Year 7 ENROLMENTS: 84 students have enrolled to begin their secondary education at the College. 32 are external from Morang South PS, Mernda Park PS, Mill Park Heights PS and a scattering of enrolments come from beyond our region. STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

YEAR 6 REFLECTION SELENA & JACOB YEAR 6 SRC

Hey everyone! We're back from our holidays and Term 3 is off to an awesome start! We've got so much to look forward to, especially in Week 5 —it's going to be insane!

First up, we've got our 5/6 camp! Can't wait for all the fun activities and hanging out with friends and teachers on camp. We can ’ t wait to see Mr Ross and Mr Kim on the flying fox! It's going to be a blast and a chance to learn new things outside the classroom and with our friends. Then there's Science Week! We love getting hands - on with experiments and exploring cool scientific stuff. It's going to be epic! We can ’ t wait to see what experiments Ms Wilson and our teachers have in store for us! Oh, and don't forget about our Digital Design excursion to Quantum Victoria where we will design and print in 3D. That's going to be super interesting, diving into technology and how it works in real life. Can't wait to see what we'll learn! We've also started reading 'Wonder' for our text response unit. It's such an amazing book, about empathy and kindness and knowing we'll watch the movie in Week 10 makes it even more exciting!

As SRC members, we're also planning what to do with the money we've raised this year. It's cool to be involved and make decisions that benefit everyone.

Overall, Term 3 is shaping up to be one of the best yet. We've got a lot on but it's all going to be so much fun and a great learning experience.

YEAR 7 REFLECTION BERTRAND & JAHMIN YEAR 7 SRC

We have been on the Secondary Campus for a whole 6 months now and we are really enjoying it. We are super excited to continue on learning here.

Rhythm Revival was fun, unique and some Year 7’ s participated in it. This Semester all the other Year 7 classes will get to have their turn.

In Science, we have been learning about forces and learning how to use a microscope. In Math ’ s we have been learning about Algebra and in English we have been either analysing the movie Hugo or reading Top Stories.

It is a new Semester which means we have just started our elective classes. Some of us are trying Product Design, Digital Technologies and Dance. So far, we are having fun.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT

Hello to all of our families and welcome back for Term 3!

Firstly, a huge congratulations to everyone involved with the Rhythm Revival night in June. Everyone did an amazing and fabulous job and I am really looking forward to the second one in October! Similarly, to our bi - yearly Production, the night not only showcases our school ’ s talented students, but there is also the intangible benefit that it brings both Campuses together as a united school and boosts school pride, all of which align with the core areas of our school ’ s Strategic Plan. This Term please look out for the details for our Father ’ s Day stall and breakfast, both to be held in late August. Importantly, this year ordering gifts for the stall will be all done online with CompassTix, so no need to remember to come into the office to pay! The Fundraising Committee ’ s Father ’ s Day breakfast will be held on Friday August 30. This was a huge success last year, so I encourage families to attend if they are able to. Lastly, on another note I would also strongly encourage everyone to complete the Department of Education ’ s Parent Opinion Survey please. This is a randomised survey that will be sent to 200 families via email across the school in the coming week. The data gathered from the survey is incredibly meaningful for measuring the school ’ s performance, so it is vital to get as many responses as possible. All responses are confidential and are de - identified to the school.

At our most recent School Council meeting held this week:

• Ms Lee presented to School Council a summary of her and Mr Panas ’ study trip to New Zealand in June. It was amazing and so impressive to hear about the way New Zealand schools have embedded their indigenous culture and heritage in to school life, which has led to thinking about a wide range of initiatives that could be introduced to The Lakes to celebrate, preserve and connect with our local Indigenous history;

• Ms Hayton reported to School Council on ideas the SRC would like to spend their fundraising money on. We provided feedback on last year ’ s Colour Run event and formally endorsed holding another one in November;

• Mr Taylor and Ms Greaves presented on the student agency work they have been leading, including the complete set up of processes on the Compass platform, results from the 2024 Attitudes to School Survey, and what Learner Agency Hour and Learning Coach sessions contain, including student Discovery Interviews on both Campuses; • Discussed what we know so far about the recent Minister for Children ’ s announcement of the building of a Kindergarten on the Primary Campus. A consultative committee will be established at some point in the future to assist with planning;

• Endorsed to have the exterior of the gym on Secondary to be re - painted;

• Acknowledged Mr Sarlos ’ efforts in the role of Acting College Principal during the week of June 13 - 24 in the absence of Mr Panas, Ms Lee and Mr Abney - Hastings;

• Endorsed to have Father ’ s Day breakfast held on Friday 30 August 2024; and

• Endorsed to remove the ‘ formal ’ vs ‘ PE only ’ prescribed uniform on Secondary, meaning that all items can be a pick and choose/mix and match for each student.

As always, if you have any issues, ideas, questions that you would like raised at our next Council meeting, or any other support, we are more than happy to hear from families so please feel free to send me an email to amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au. Council meets twice per term on a Tuesday at 5:30pm and visitors and observers are always welcome!

Cheers,

Amanda Farrelly School Council President

NEW BEGINNINGS

We are thrilled to announce that a new Kindergarten will be built at our College!

This is an exciting time for our school, and I look forward to sharing further updates and the design of the building once they become available.

Why build Kinders at schools?

This new centre will provide additional Kindergarten places for the local community, while making drop - off time simpler and more convenient for some families. We are working closely with the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), who will oversee construction works. We expect the kinder to be completed and open Term 1, 2026. The Kindergarten will be operated by an external organisation with experience in running Kinders. Once appointed, they will manage all enrolment, staffing and program enquiries. We ’ re mindful of any impact construction might have on our community, and we ’ re working with the VSBA to minimise this. The VSBA will create a dedicated webpage for the project so that you can track its progress and get updates.

Building Kinders at schools provides many benefits for Victorian families, including making:

Kinder programs easier to access

drop - off time simpler and more convenient for some families

the transition from Kinder to school smoother for children.

More information If you have any questions about the Kindergarten works at The Lakes South Morang College you can contact the VSBA by phone at 1800 896 950, email vsba@education.vic.gov.au or visit their website: https://www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au
