I Love What I Do Reflecting on My Path to the Legal Profession

It’s always interesting to reflect on how you got to where you are. In my case, becoming an attorney was part luck, part saying yes to the right opportunities, and a lot of hard work. Joining the Marine Corps was a turning point for me. Until then, I hadn’t found my calling. I wasn’t a dedicated student in my younger years, and I joined the Corps because I knew it would force me to get my act together. It did just that. If you’re lazy going into the Marine Corps, they’ll get the lazy out of you. It teaches you to step up to the challenge and not be afraid of confrontation. At the time, I had no intention of being a lawyer. But when I joined, the Corps offered me a spot in the law program, so I took the opportunity. I got to serve as an assistant U.S. attorney and prosecutor. I served in the Marine Corps through the Gulf War, and in the drawdown after the war, I retired. By that point, I was married and had kids, so I was happy to come home, but the Corps will always remain an important part of my life. From there, I pursued my legal career. Thanks to one of my peers in the legal community, I got off to a strong start. They had a case that was to be tried in my county and asked if I wanted it. I dove in, tried the case, and got a good result for the client. Within a week, that attorney sent me 188 case files and launched me into my personal injury practice.

From the time I started, it was clear that the Marine Corps had connected me with something I could devote my life to. I love what I do, and I love trying cases, in part because I like the competition. As a kid, I played football and lacrosse and wrestled. Athletics fueled my competitive side growing up, and today, trying cases fulfills it. I love what I do because I get to help people. You have to care about people in this line of work. You can try to fool people about many things, but you can’t fool them about caring. When you sit down with your attorney, you have to feel like they’ve got your back. Their word should be their bond. We are working with people at their toughest points. We have to be able to see them and hear them, to understand what they have been through, and to relay that pain and suffering to a courtroom. I get to be an advocate who stands up and speaks for my clients. At the end of the day, all we’re trying to do is tell the truth. Today, my wife and I live in Rock Hill in the same community where I grew up. We have five amazing kids. We were lucky enough to get a bonus baby with our fourth child — twins! Our fifth baby, one of our twins, was born with heart issues, and that’s what brought us back home. We wanted to be closer to family and have the

support network I grew up with. I came home and started my practice, and I’m proud to be part of this community and to represent and fight for the people in it. I look forward to connecting with you each month in this newsletter. If you need anything, know I am here for you.

Until next time,

–Craig Wilkerson

The History of the Palmetto Bowl

A Tradition Is Born

It might seem strange that November —whenmillions of Americans gather around the dinner table to show gratitude through lavish Thanksgiving feasts — has recently been dubbed Good Nutrition Month. But it’s true; now is the time to pay extra attention to the nutrients your body needs to maintain its healthy state through the new year. While mindful eating is a habit families know they should practice year- round, once the holiday season kicks into full gear, it becomes much easier to overlook. With colder weather keeping you inside, the cravings for heartier meals and delicious baked goods leave parents struggling to encourage their picky eaters to consume anything nutritious. If you’re finding it more difficult than usual to convince your child to eat their greens, here are some tips to keep in mind! Let Them Help. If your child has grown out of the toddler stage and is still resistant to eating their vegetables, child psychologists say you should have them help with the cooking process. The excitement and anticipation that comes with getting to prepare the vegetables can encourage kids to try a couple bites during dinnertime. 1. It’s a custom as old as time — well, as old as the radio, that is, whose patent application was submitted the same year that Clemson played the University of South Carolina for the very first time in 1896. Setting the stage for a historic in-state athletic showdown, the rivalry is the longest uninterrupted rivalry series in the South and the second longest continuous rivalry in Division 1 football. Since that first game when South Carolina took the win, the Clemson Tigers have taken on the South Carolina Gamecocks each year in an event that’s come to be officially known as the Palmetto Bowl. Game Day Thursday For many years, the game between the Tigers and the Gamecocks took place on a Thursday, coinciding with the South Carolina State Fair at the time. In 1959, both teams wanted to play on weekends and later in the season, so game day moved to a Saturday. It has been that way since, with the two teams alternating as hosts each year. Double Trouble Cary Cox is the only player to serve as captain for both the Tigers and the Gamecocks, albeit unwillingly. He started at Clemson in 1942, but an assignment through the Navy College Training Program forced him to switch schools and play for South Carolina. Despite Cox’s reluctance to play against his former team, he led the Gamecocks to a 33-6 victory. Unfortunately, hiswinning streak didn’t last when he eventually returned

to Clemson in 1947. Even with Cox at the helm of his original team, the game against South Carolina was a losing one for the Tigers that year.

Coming into the 2019 season, Clemson has won the bowl the last five years, matching South Carolina’s five-year winning streak from 2009–13. Clemson also won their third national championship in school history last year, coming off of a perfect 15-0 season. As for who will take the bowl on Nov. 30, well, we’ll have to watch to find out.

Get Ready for Good Nutrition in November! 3 Tips to Get Your Picky Eaters to Eat the Veggies Their Bodies Need

2. Cheese It Up! Cheese can undoubtedly make veggies more appealing for your little ones. When making their favorite mac ‘n’ cheese dish, consider adding broccoli and peas to the sauce. The cheese will mask most of the veggie flavor, and your kids won’t care as much! Another option for really picky eaters is to purée vegetables, like sweet potatoes, into the cheese sauce. The bright orange color will mask the inclusion, ensuring your little one gets a good share of fiber-rich nutrients while being none the wiser. Get ‘Beefy’ With Your Veggies. If your kids are fans of meat-based pasta sauces, meatballs, or sloppy Joes, you can substitute some of the ground beef with finely chopped mushrooms. Since the meaty texture of the tasty fungi is similar to ground beef, it’ll be hard for kids to notice the difference. Riced cauliflower can also be mistaken for tender ground beef when cooked in darker sauces and gravies. While it can be frustrating to negotiate with a picky eater, especially during the holidays, don’t lose hope. Try out these three tasty tips and observe Good Nutrition Month with a little more ease. 3.

Who’s Footing the Bill? What You Should Be Asking of Your Auto Policy

But, if your car ends up being more damaged than you thought or your neck pain turns out to be something more serious, you could quickly end up paying out of pocket for mechanics and medical bills. It all depends on your coverage.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage Underinsured motorist coverage, or UIM, covers you when the at-fault party doesn’t have enough insurance to pay for all the damages to you and your vehicle. Personal Injury Protection Coverage Personal injury protection coverage, or PIP, covers all the necessary medical expenses that you or your passengers need, regardless of who is at fault. Some PIP policies also cover lost wages as a result of a collision. Neither of these coverages is mandatory in South Carolina, but in the event that you are in a serious wreck, they can be tremendously beneficial. If you’ve been in a collision and are unsure of what to do next, we’re here to help. Our founding attorney, F. Craig Wilkerson, is experienced in personal injury matters and holding responsible parties accountable. He doesn’t hesitate to take insurance companies to court when it’s necessary. Give our office a call today so you can get the compensation you deserve.

South Carolina Auto Insurance Requirements

In South Carolina, drivers are required to have liability insurance, which covers damage done by an at-fault driver, and uninsured motorist coverage, which provides coverage when the at-fault party doesn’t have insurance or when they leave the scene. This might sound like plenty, but what happens if a car crash is really bad? It’s not somethingwe like to think about, but in the event that you or a loved one are seriously injured in a collision, medical costs add up quickly, and having the right policy is life-changing. If you carry only the minimum coverage required by our state, it might be time to reevaluate your plan and consider upping your policy to include these options.

You’re in a car crash, but thankfully, neither you nor the other driver is seriously injured. Your neck is bothering you, but you’re not too worried. You and the at-fault driver both have insurance, and that’ll be enough to cover the damages to you and your car.

The Gift of Giving

Celebrating Giving Tuesday

Supporting the People You Believe In

HowYou Can Celebrate Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part of this holiday is that “giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact. If you’re interested in participating in Giving Tuesday, get together with your friends, family, sports team members, or neighbors to brainstorm on how you can give back. To learn more about how you can participate, visit GivingTuesday.org.

November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love.
