Speke Highly of These Fine Halls & Stonking Cities This tour features some of the finest houses and gardens in Cheshire and Merseyside. We have a whole day at Tatton Park as well as visits to Speke Hall and Little Moreton Hall whilst due to its prime location, we offer a choice of trips to Southport or Liverpool and the Northwest power house, Manchester. We couldn’t be better placed. PACKAGED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Tatton Hall, Park & Farm Today we have a full day at Tatton Park with entrance to the mansion, beautifully set amidst landscaped parkland, the gardens and the farm. Afterwards we are free to explore the mansion at leisure, perhaps get a fascinating glimpse of life ‘below stairs’ in the servants’ quarters and wine cellar. After a break for lunch we can then enjoy a stroll in the lavish gardens with its manicured lawns, arboretum and Japanese garden before setting our sights on Tatton Dale, the corner of the estate where we find the farm. Here we can see how food has been produced since the 18th century, perhaps meet characters who lived and worked here in the 1940s and see some of the rare breeds. Day 3 Southport or Liverpool & Speke Hall This morning we can choose to spend free time in the classic Victorian seaside resort of Southport, with its fabulous sandy beaches, perhaps taking a leisurely stroll down the UK’s oldest iron pier to the Pavilion for breathtaking views, or head to Liverpool. From the Royal Albert Docks and The Beatles Story, to Tate Liverpool and the Maritime Museum, this famous city has something for everyone. This afternoon we head to Merseyside for a visit to Speke Hall , one of the finest surviving examples of what is called a ‘wattle and daub’ wooden Tudor building. The garden and estate are known locally as a green oasis and depending on season, we can see a multitude of colour, manicured lawns and topiary throughout, with equally impressive views of the house. The house itself is steeped in 500 years of history and mystery; view the huge collection of ancient carved oak furniture and original William Morris wallpaper and keep a look out for the ‘priest hole’ in the Green bedroom. Last entry is 16.30, so we have plenty of time to make the most of our afternoon. Day 4 Manchester This morning we meet our guide for our 2 hour step-on tour of Manchester . Our tour will unveil a host of hidden gems as we learn about some of the ‘firsts’ the city has produced in its long and illustrious history. We see the Bridgewater Canal, uncover the story of the world’s first passenger railway, experience Sackville Park and the story of Alan Turing and walk in the footsteps of LS Lowry. Having built up a thirst, we relax with a drink in one of the many vibrant pubs, with time to reflect on what we have seen. We spend the rest of the day at leisure in Manchester. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.
