Newcastle serves as our brilliant base for this tour, which packs in Northern history and heritage. We include guided tours of the vibrant city and of the ‘Three Families’, discovering some of the North East’s most influential families. We also step back in time at the famous open-air Beamish Living History Museum! PACKAGED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Newcastle Today we are met by our guide who will treat us to a half day step-on guided tour of Newcastle . We experience how the city has dramatically changed from “carrying coal” to becoming a cultural hub within North East England. Understand the history and heritage from its Roman origins, Anglo Saxon past through to the age of steam and coal to today and beyond. Highlights include Old Newcastle (castle and cathedral quarters), classic Grainger Town (Earl Grey – he of the tea!), Quayside and some hidden gems along the way. After our tour we have the rest of the day at leisure to explore this city. Day 3 Beamish Museum Today we visit the Living Museum of the North, the Beamish Museum . This famous open-air museum, set within 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside, tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. We experience town life as it would have been in the 1940s during World War II, visit a 1940’s farm, pop into the Colliery and Pit Village in the early 1900s and take unlimited free rides on the Beamish tram. Day 4 Three Families Tour Today we are met by our guide as we embark on a full day step-on tour of the Three Families . Explore some of the most influential families in North East England. At Wallington House , we learn about the Blackett family, wealthy mine owners and politically influential, and the famous Trevelyan family. One of the most influential surnames to date, however – and for good reason – must be that of Armstrong. Lord William Armstrong of both Newcastle and Cragside was an industrialist, inventor and philanthropist. Learn about the influences of North East powerhouses during this awe- inspiring National Trust tour of Wallington & Cragside. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.

Join us on a magical 5-day tour of Northumberland to experience this unique area of Britain with best-preserved Roman ruins including the iconic Hadrian’s Wall, beautiful coastal views and spectacular castles. Surrounded in stunning scenery and steeped in history, we visit the well-known Alnwick Castle, backdrop for the wizardry of the Harry Potter films as well as the ancient Bamburgh Castle, dating back 1400 years. PACKAGED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Alnwick Castle & Gardens This morning we travel to the ancient market town of Alnwick as we visit the 700-year old Alnwick Castle . Home to the Percy family for over 700 years, the spectacular castle was the magical setting for several Harry Potter films and TV series, Downtown Abbey. Experience its fascinating history first-hand as resident artisans display their medieval crafts. This afternoon, we visit the Alnwick Garden , an unconventional garden which includes enticing areas like the Bamboo Labyrinth, the Poison Garden and the Grand Cascade! Day 3 History of Hadrian’s Wall & Roman Vindolanda Today we are joined by a step-on guide to discover the true history of Hadrian’s Wall during this fascinating journey along Rome’s most Northerly frontier while our expert guide will bring Roman heritage to life. We explore Corbridge, a former Roman village, see some of the most spectacular parts of Hadrian’s Wall and visit Roman Vindolanda to experience one of the best-preserved Roman forts and museums. Day 4 Holy Island and Lindisfarne Priory & Bamburgh Castle Today we travel to the tiny and magical Holy Island located just off the dramatic Northumberland coastline, a place of worship, tranquillity and breath-taking beauty. We visit the 12thcentury Lindisfarne Priory, the epicentre of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times. Afterwards, we head to the impressive 1,400-year-old Bamburgh Castle set on a rocky plateau and towering over the beaches. We’ll step back in history as we see the ancient artefacts in the King’s Hall, State Rooms, the Armoury and The Keep. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
