The Bowes Museum Ha’way to Timeless Treasures & Do the Locomotion From our base in the magnificent Redworth Hall Hotel, our tour of the northeast and North Yorkshire brings the rich history of both counties to life. We take in the 14th century ruins of Mount Grace Priory & Shildon’s engaging Locomotion railway museum, visit medieval Raby Castle and the Bowes Museum, a grand chateau filled with art treasures and end our stay with a visit to the fabulous Auckland Project. PACK AG ED ITI NER A RY Day 1 Arrival This morning we visit Raby Castle, one of England’s finest medieval castles, which has stood proud and defiant for almost 1,000 years. The Victorian and Regency interiors are as opulent as the exterior is imposing, and showcase everything from porcelain to sculptures to Victorian copper cooking utensils and The Raby Tapestry. In the afternoon we visit Bowes Museum a Grade-1 listed French-style château in the picturesque market town of Barnard Castle. One of the most important museums outside London, this monumental house hosts collections of art, fashion & design in its stunning galleries. Day 3 Mount Grace Priory & Locomotion Today starts with a visit to Mount Grace Priory, the remains of a 14th century Carthusian priory and gardens enfolded in North Yorkshire woodlands. We can wander the priory ruins to view the church tower, great cloister and a reconstructed monk’s cell, gaining fascinating insight into the monks who lived here in solitude and silence. We can also roam the glorious gardens. This afternoon, our explorations continue at the Locomotion national railway museum in Shildon, the place where the world’s first steam-powered railway came to life. Explore the indoor and outdoor collections of historic trains and locomotives, including Stephenson’s Rocket, Timothy Hackworth’s San Pareil, carriages, wagons and more. Day 4 Auckland Project This morning we have a leisurely breakfast and some time to enjoy the fabulous leisure facilities at our hotel before heading to Bishop Auckland where we are treated to a light lunch of soup & sandwiches at Auckland Palace . Afterwards we have the rest of the afternoon at leisure to explore the Palace , Spanish Galleries, Walled Garden and the rest of Bishop Auckland. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home. We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Raby Castle & Bowes Museum

Durham Cathedral Quire East View Cathedral to Cobbles: Durham Weekender

This weekend short break offers a perfect taster of the centuries-old city of Durham and a slice of living local history on top. We start by delving into the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of old Durham to witness its Romanesque Cathedral and soak up its other sights at our leisure. The next day, we travel to the award-winning Beamish Museum in County Durham, an immersive outdoor museum which brings the bygone days of the northeast back to life. PACKAGED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Durham We spend today in the small but grand city of Durham, beginning with a visit to beautiful Durham Cathedral where we admire its breathtaking vaulted ceiling and distinctive carved pillars. The Cathedral is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site which also covers Durham Castle and the buildings located between them. We spend the rest of the day at leisure. The city is compact so we can easily explore, with highlights including the stunning Castle, Palace Green, the old marketplace and pleasant riverside walks. Please be aware that Durham city has some steep streets. Day 3 Beamish Museum Today brings a treat for history buffs. We head to the award-winning Beamish Museum , dubbed the Living Museum of the North, to experience daily life in the north-east during the last two centuries. Occupying 300 acres of picturesque Durham countryside, this famous open-air museum recreates life from the 1820s and 1900s using costumed characters, reconstructed buildings and authentic vehicles. Here, we can stroll along cobbled streets, visit a 1940s farm and pit village, learn about the tribulations of Victorian life from the costumed volunteers, enjoy free rides on the old-fashioned street tram and more. Day 4 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.
