Trinity Elder Law & Estate Planning - March 2024

EMBRACE THE PAUSE Unplug to Enhance Your Wellness In a world dominated by technology, where our smartphones are practically extensions of our hands and laptops and tablets serve as constant companions, digital detoxes have become even more important. March 1 is the National Day of Unplugging — a day that encourages us to hit the pause button on our tech-driven lives and rediscover the benefits of being present in the moment. While technology enriches our lives and makes things easier, constant connectivity can take a toll on our well-being, and just like any other aspect of life, balance is key. In my life, I’ve incorporated simple practices to create pockets of tech-free time. At my office desk, I have a small bowl that serves as a designated spot for my phone during work hours. Placing it out of immediate reach is my cue to resist the temptation to pick it up and check it, allowing me to focus. During my morning walks with my dog, I carry my phone for emergencies and to take photos, of course. But it only serves as a camera. I deliberately refrain from answering calls, responding to texts, or checking emails during this time. Have any of you heard of “forest bathing”? Rooted in the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, forest bathing involves immersing oneself in nature, embracing the therapeutic benefits of the natural environment. Studies suggest that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. We all need more time outdoors! The benefits of unplugging extend beyond mental health — it fosters stronger connections with those around us, increases productivity, and promotes a healthier work-life balance. While technology is a powerful tool, recognizing the need for intermittent breaks is crucial for our overall health and well-being!
