Svratite u Majnc kod Gutenberga

DROP IN AT GUTENBERG’S MAINZ If you find yourself in Frankfurt for the book fair, be sure to head to where it all began: Mainz, the hometown of the man who forever changed the world of books, Johann Gutenberg. Just 40 kilo- metres southwest of Frankfurt, on the banks of the Rhine, stands this charm- ing university town where the first Bi- ble was printed and a true revolution of knowledge began. Mainz is just 30 minutes away from Frankfurt by train, while those who like scenic driving will enjoy the pic- turesque landscape of riverside vine- yards. The first stop for any book lover is the Gutenberg Museum, housed in a Re- naissance building located next to Mainz cathedral. On display there are original editions of the famous Guten- berg Bible that dates back to the 15 th century, as well as precise reconstruc- tions of his printing presses. The muse-

um provides a detailed presentation of how this single technological discovery enabled the spread of knowledge, ide- as and literature – and ultimately led to Europe’s cultural renaissance. Gutenberg himself (c. 1400–1468) was a goldsmith and innovator who man- aged to combine metallurgy, mechan- ics and typography. His movable-type printing press made books available to everyone, and not just the privileged. It is no coincidence that he is today dubbed the father of modern printing. Apart from museums, Mainz offers other gems: the impressive 10 th -centu- ry St. Martin’s Cathedral, picturesque alleys of the old town and, of course, wine bars where you can try the re- gion’s famous Riesling. So, if books bring you to Frankfurt, be sure to take an excursion to Mainz – a place that serves to remind us that the Book Fair wouldn’t even exist without one man and his vision.
