THE EXORCIST (1973) It continues to cause controversy to this day, as it did when it first ap- peared in cinemas 52 years ago. Friedkin’s religious horror gets under your skin from the outset. Despite the film having a lack of actual death, a strong impression is made by its creepy atmosphere, which compels us to question our own faith. Ellen Burstyn plays a mother whose daugh- ter becomes demonically possessed. Following unsuccessful attempts to “cure” her unknown affliction, she turns to exorcism.

ALIEN (1979) It could be claimed that the 1970s represented the most important decade for horror and the development of subgenres. Alien brought many innovations to cinema audiences. It was the first time in a commercial action film that a woman appeared as the chief protag- onist – in the form of Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver. The film is a fusion of horror, thriller and sci fi, while the first two films in the fran- chise (particularly James Cameron’s Aliens) are remembered as champions of feminism, though that topic was debated at the time. And, of course, let’s not forget to mention the famous scary tagline from the poster: “In space, no one can hear you scream”.

ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968) Rosemary’s Baby is – alongside Chinatown – prob- ably Roman Polanski’s best film. Stories of Satanic cults remain a controversial topic to this day, but this film caused huge scandals when it was released al- most 60 years ago. A year after it premiered, Polan- ski’s then wife, Sharon Tate, was brutally murdered, which was immediately interpreted by many as be- ing a consequence of the film. Mia Farrow plays Rose- mary, a woman who becomes pregnant after moving into a new building where mysterious things happen, and her pregnancy has complications. Despite being shot 57 years ago, the film is still chilling.
