Znate li kako je 25. oktobar spojio slikare, pisce, muzičare sa operom i šta je zajedničko Pikasu, Štrausu i Keti Peri?
Do you know how the date of 25 th October has unified painters, writers and musicians with the opera; and what Picasso, Strauss and Katy Perry have in common?
INTERNATIONAL ARTIST DAY The power to change the world Every 25 th October provides an ideal occasion for us to stop and give thanks to everyone who provides us with a more beautiful reality through their works T he date of 25 th October marks a special day in the annual calendar of world cul- ture. That’s because it is the International Day of Artists, when we celebrate the infinite power of creativity – from painting and literature, via music and dance, to contemporary digital forms. The idea for this holiday first emerged in 2014, when Canadian painter Chris McClure launched an in- itiative for artists around the world to be recognised for their contribution to shaping our lives. Artists have served throughout history as prophets, visionaries and rebels. Their works have testified to different epochs and served as motivators of change and sources of comfort. This internation- al day reminds us that art isn’t a luxu- ry, but rather a daily necessity – a lan- guage of universal understanding. It is commemorated worldwide in the form of exhibitions, workshops, public per- formances, discussions and virtual gath- erings through which artistic practices connect with the public. This date has special significance because the birthday of the great Pablo Picasso was selected for this holiday, while the same date also marks World Opera Day... FROM GEORGES BIZET TO TODAY’S SCENE Opera is often considered “the synthesis of all arts”. That’s because intertwining within this medium are drama, music, poetry, architecture and costume design
– all in the service of moving the view- er emotionally. It is no coincidence that World Opera Day was established on the date of 25 th October – as that day marks the birthdays of two musical greats: Georges Bizet and Johann Strauss II. The first man gifted the opera Carmen to the world, which didn’t prove suc- cessful upon first showing, though it has since become one of the most wide- ly performed operatic masterpieces ev- er. The second man, known as the King of the Waltz, brought lightness and joy to the operetta form, demonstrat- ing how music can be both serious and playful. This day has been commemorated since 2019, based on the joint initiative of Opera America, Opera Europa and Ópera Latinoamérica. It has the clear objective of better acquainting new gen- erations with opera, highlighting its so- cial role and emphasising the notion that this art form, which was created in Florence in the late 16 th century, still has something to say about love, struggle and passion. How is it celebrated? The most com- mon ways are through open rehears- als, street concerts, free broadcasts
Međunarodni dan umetnika podseća nas na značaj umetnosti u našim životima International Artists’ Day reminds us of the importance of art in our lives of shows and even behind-the-scenes tours. Opera is no longer a closed af- fair that unfolds behind red velvet and gilded boxes – today it relocates to squares, parks and screens. Audienc- es worldwide are thus able to discover that, behind all the glamour, stands a huge community – of musicians, sing- ers, choral ensembles, costume design- ers, technicians – without whom these shows would not come to life.
