The idea to erect a temple on the spot dates back to the late 19 th century, while the foundation stone was laid in 1935. However, construction was delayed by the turbulent events of the 20 th centu- ry and the building was only complet- ed in the new millennium. It is precisely this protracted construction process that symbolically depicts the patience and per- severance of the Serbian people. The dimensions of the temple leave vis- itors lost for words: together with the cross, the building reaches a height of 79 metres, while the interior is able to accommodate a congregation of up to 10,000 believers. With a 30-metre di- ameter and a weight of over 4,000 tons, the dome itself was erected using special technology and is decorated with a mo- saic of the Pantocrator Christ, one of the most impressive works of contemporary Byzantine art. The temple’s interior is decorated with mosaics covering an area of more than 15,000 square meters. Representing the
work of Russian and Ser- bian artists, the mosaic tiles are made in gold, sil- ver and cobalt glass. Every scene depicted – from bib- lical scenes to portraits of saints – exudes a sense of monumentality and so- lemnity, but also the ten- derness of fine details.
