I f there’s anywhere in the world that unifies comics, film, series, games and fans from all cor- ners of the planet, that is New York Comic Con (NYCC). It is held at the Javits Convention Center from 9 th to 12 th October and has long been considered the largest festival of pop culture on America’s East Coast. Here you will meet everyone - from Marvel and DC fans wearing spectac- ular costumes, via passionate gam- ers, to authors of the most popular manga and anime series. The packed programme includes panel debates and exclusive screenings: announce- ments for this year include the Game of Thrones spinoff Knight of the Sev- en Kingdoms, as well as a gathering of actors from the X-Men film fran- chise, which is already leading to eu- phoria among fans. There will also be comic book premieres, the first glimps- es of new blockbusters and meetings with world-famous cartoon artists and screenwriters. Occupying a special part of NYCC is Artist Alley, where you can personally meet your favourite comic artists, pur- chase original works or get a person- alised drawing. It is advised that those attending for the first time reserve their tickets in advance (they often sell out months ahead of the event) and prepare for large crowds – but also for an unforgettable atmosphere. NYCC isn’t just a festival, it is an expe- rience. Those days see the city packed with masked fans, while Times Square and the surrounding streets are trans- formed into an extended conven- tion stage. If you find yourself in New York in October, this event is not to be missed – because Comic Con isn’t just about the heroes of comic books, it’s al- so about the people who believe in the stories. NIGHT WHEN NEW YORK When it comes to costumes, it is of course known which night attracts the most costumed Americans! And if there’s one city that knows how to celebrate Halloween spectacular- BECOMES A MASS COSTUME PARTY

ly, then that’s New York. Representing the heart of this celebration is the Vil- lage Halloween Parade, representing a unique costume parade held each 31 st October along the length of Manhat- tan’s Sixth Avenue, from Spring Street to 16 th Street. Founded all the way back in 1974, this parade has grown to become the world’s largest Halloween event, bring- ing together more than 50,000 partic- ipants and hundreds of thousands of spectators. The rule is simple – any- one can participate, provided they don a costume. It is precisely this sponta- neity that makes the procession a spe- cial experience: an angelic orchestra may pass you one moment, only for a giant paper figure to appear a moment later, followed immediately by a group of zombies dancing to Michael Jack- son’s Thriller. Apart from thousands of masked cit- izens, participants also include art troupes, puppet shows, musicians and drummers, all of whom help to create an atmosphere that fluctuates between a carnival and a surreal outdoor theatre show. And the costumes are often gen- uine mini masterpieces – portraying everything from current political cari- catures to heroes of films and comics, and even completely abstract ideas. We advise that you arrive early, as the streets around the procession soon fill up. Admission is free of charge and the best view is enjoyed by those who occupy the lower part of Sixth Ave- nue. If you’re in the mood to social- ise and have fun, join the procession - because the Village Halloween Parade isn’t only a stroll wearing a costume, but a collective celebration of imagi- nation and freedom.
