LEPOTICA MEDITERANA / BEAUTIFUL LADY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN Šta povezuje Srbiju i Maltu? What connects Serbia and Malta?
Među njima i čuvenu heroi- nu Milunku Savić. Srpska pravoslavna crkva Parohija Sv. apostola Pavla i Sv.
D id you know that Vallet- ta was the first planned city in Europe? The city’s de- sign was sketched by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Val- ette in 1565. Construction was complet- ed in just 15 years and it is today known as one of the world’s fastest-built cities. There are many interesting facts about Malta that we could list, but we’ll use this opportunity to reveal to you some con- nections that exist between this beauty of the Mediterranean and Serbia... Monument of remembrance A recent initiative of Serbs from Mal- ta resulted in the unveiling of a monu- ment erected as a sign of gratitude for
the rescue of Serbian soldiers in Marsas- kala. In 1918, a German submarine hit the French SS Polynesia in Marsaskala, Malta, which was transporting 500 Ser- bian officer cadets from Bizerte to the Macedonian Front. Maltese fishermen and local residents used their small boats to rush to the aid of the shipwrecked Serbs, saving the majority from drown- ing. Among them was famous war hero- ine Milunka Savić. Serbian Orthodox Church The Serbian Orthodox Missionary Par- ish of St. Paul the Apostle and St. Nicho- las signed a contract in 2021 for the use of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Birżebbuģa for a period of 25 years. The church has since been renovated and re- decorated thanks to Serbs who live and work in Malta. Monarchic links Prince Pavle Karađorđević lived in exile during World War II, spending part of his time in Malta following the start of the occupation of Yugoslavia. Serbian King Petar II Karađorđević played an impor- tant role in the restoration of the Maltese activities of the Russian Grand Priory (part of the Order of the Knights of Mal- ta). In their palace today there are several portraits of this monarch.
