Since its establishment in 2009, the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship has been enthusiastically supported by local chapters both through financial contributions and submission of qualified applicants. This devotion has allowed for more than 7,000 STAR Scholarships to be awarded to young women who exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success. In total, $17,535,000 has been awarded to help these young women reach for the stars! Still, our ever-generous sisters frequently ask, “How else can my chapter support STAR?” Here are three stellar ways for your chapter to increase your involvement in the STAR Scholarship program: Going ABOVE AND BEYOND for STAR by Sue Barker, P.E.O. Become a STAR Constellation Chapter! A chapter that makes a lump sum contribution of $500 or more to STAR is designated as a Constellation Chapter. To receive recognition, your chapter’s contribution must be received by your state/ provincial/district (s/p/d) chapter treasurer or paid assistant by January 31. Individual donations of $500 or more also allow a local chapter to receive recognition as a Constellation Chapter, provided the donor specifies the chapter to be credited when making the donation. This year there were 1,168 chapters recognized as STAR Constellation Chapters, meaning these generous chapters collectively contributed over $584,000 to the project.
Provide a Named STAR Scholarship! A Named P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a one- time $2,500 scholarship presented to a graduating woman in her final year of high school who meets the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship eligibility requirements as established. The award may be named in honor or memory of an individual or chapter. Funds for this one- time scholarship can be comprised of contributions from individuals, chapters or collective gifts. Funds must be received by the P.E.O. Executive Office in Des Moines no later than December 1 to be awarded for the ensuing academic year.
Establish an Endowed STAR Scholarship! An Endowed P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a designated scholarship supported by a specially-endowed fund held in the P.E.O. Foundation. An Endowed P.E.O. STAR Scholarship may be established in honor or memory of an individual or chapter. The principal of an Endowed STAR Scholarship accrues income until that income is equivalent to the amount designated for a P.E.O. STAR Scholarship. Additional contributions may be added to the principal of this fund at any time, but the principal may not be expended. Each Named or Endowed STAR Scholarship recipient is selected by the STAR Scholarship Board of Trustees and receives the same amount as other P.E.O. STAR Scholarships awarded in that year. Recipients of Named and Endowed STAR Scholarships learn of this special designation when the formal announcement of the P.E.O. STAR Scholarships is made, and their recognition certificate reflects the name of the scholarship. Named and Endowed Scholarships and the Constellation Chapter program provide opportunities for those interested members and chapters to further support the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship and to promote outstanding young women as they enter colleges and universities. Visit the P.E.O.
