For 60 years Chapter J, Tucson, Arizona, has been selling brooms to raise funds for P.E.O. projects. It started in 1959 when Sandy Bushroe told the members about the broom business in a Las Vegas chapter. What a fun project as everybody uses a broom—at least they did in 1959. The brooms are made of broomcorn which is a sorghum vulgare variety that is grown especially for the broom. It differs from other sorghums in that it produces heads with seed branches that may be as much as 36 inches long. The early orders actually had leather halters fastening the bristles to the sticks. Now plastic is used. Friends and family always receive a broom
as they move to new homes. A local realtor orders a dozen to give to clients as they
purchase a new home. So, buy a broom and smile as you sweep your troubles away.
