Community rallies around Hawkesbury man
HAWKESBURY | Jonathan Feres is a 24-year-old artist, writer, loving son, grandson and big brother who has Down Syndrome and autism. A relatively new resident of Hawkesbury, Jonathan and his family are touched by the outstanding support and acceptance of the commu- nity. “Our first experience with this caring com- munity was with the Champlain CCAC and Jonathan’s need for special medical care,” remembers Jonathan’s mother, Pamela. “He is unable to feel when his bladder fills and can then get too full with fluid causing him to cough. He can also become easily dehy- drated requiring him to drink frequent, small amounts during his day.” Champlain CCAC has been seeing Jona- than about two to three times a week for the past eight months. Because of this sup- port, Jonathan has been able to be integra- ted into his community, participating in art classes and going to the library each week. “One particular place Jonathan loves
to go is to his art class,” adds Pamela Feres.”Many kind people are there learning how to paint and draw better. Jonathan is right along with them, happily learning. There are so many things he takes away with him when he is with abled people— and they learn from Jonathan, too. This is truly a special community with extra spe- cial people who value everyone despite our differences. Many see differences as gifts, something truly remarkable and enjoyable to see and be inspired by.” Jonathan’s family appreciates the Cham- plainCCAC and themany people inHawkes- bury who have lent assistance or provided support. “We’d like to thank Genette Mayer, Nathalie Frenière (his art teacher), and all the team at Options Education in Hawkes- bury. We’re also grateful to the friends in his class that greet him and take an interest in him. The Hawkesbury Library has also been very supportive.” Submitted by Champlain Community Care Access Centre
