Two doctoral students were featured in the University of Iowa’s Dare to Discover campaign, which showcases researchers, scholars, and creators.

Dr. Platte also worked with ANASTASIA SCHOLZE ’23 to release the trailer and first episode of their podcast, Sounding Cinema, which explores how film music and sound transport us, building worlds beyond what we see on screen. It can be found on Spotify, iTunes, and other podcast streaming services.

DR. NATHAN PLATTE received FilmScene’s Visionary Advocate Award for his work cohosting FilmCastPodScene. He described the podcast as “a partnership that seeks to sustain community among film enthusiasts while theaters remain mostly closed.”

DMA student LAURA CANELO COHEN is conducting innovative research in flute pedagogy.

Cohen says: “My research uses the spectrogram, a visual representation of sound, as a pedagogical tool to improve sound consistency and flexibility on the flute. For centuries, tone pedagogy has been based on intuition … [my research] provides the musician visual cues for making the necessary adjustments in achieving tone consistency and flexibility.”

Music Therapy PhD candidate HAE SUN KIM’S cutting-edge music therapy research also earned her a spot in the campaign.

Her research is designed to develop online learning modules for music therapy students, focusing on music and hearing loss. She says: “In the United States, hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic physical condition among older adults; however, there are currently limited resources and in-depth instruction regarding music and hearing loss in the field of music therapy. I am interested in developing online simulation- based modules for music therapists. These online instructional modules will be flexible, accessible, and affordable resources for music therapists who seek to deepen and broaden their knowledge and skills related to hearing loss.”

ALUM TEDDY VAN WINKLE ’20 was awarded an Honorable Mention by the International Trombone Association (ITA) as part of its Robert Marstellar Tenor Trombone Solo Competition. Teddy is also a member of the University of North Texas Trombone Consortium, which won the ITA’s Emory Remington Trombone Choir Competition.

Flute alum ROSE BISHOP ’15 recently published A Flutist’s Guide to the Voxman Etudes. Coauthored by Lizzy Darling, the book provides background information on flute composers, as well as tempo ranges, challenges and practice suggestions for each etude, errata, and musical terminology definitions.
