Piano Technician JEREMY HERRERA received the UI Outstanding Staff Award. Input from piano faculty and students was submitted, noting his great rapport with members of the School of Music community, as well as the tremendous skill and dedication he brings to his craft. He does everything from quick tune-ups on teaching assistant pianos to preparing multiple pianos and responding to feedback during recording sessions.

He was a renowned jazz trombonist, composer, and gifted teacher who also conducted the Johnson County Landmark Orchestra and established the BA and MA degrees in jazz during his tenure at the University of Iowa.

Dr. David Puderbaugh’s CD, A Black Birch in Winter (MSR Classics, 2019), won Recording of the Year in Estonia! Congratulations to him and the stellar voices of Voces Tallinn.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor DR. ANABEL MALER and Visiting Assistant Professor DR. ROBERT KOMANIECKI , who recently received the Adam Krims Award from the Society of Music Theory’s Popular Music Interest Group! This award is given for an outstanding publication on popular music and was granted to them for their coauthored paper, Rhythmic Techniques in Deaf Hip Hop. The paper broke new ground on the examination of rhythm and flow in ASL hip hop, synthesizing techniques from non-signed rap analysis and non-rapped signed music analysis to inspect tracks from various ASL hip hop, or dip hop, artists.

Instrument Repair Technician CHAD WALKER led a standing- room-only instrument repair workshop at the annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December 2021. He shared his expertise in wind instrument repair techniques for music educators.
