Often the first thought when you hear the term “memory loss” is dementia or Alzheimer's. However, there are many causes of memory loss: stress, lack of sleep, side effects of medication, side effects of medical conditions, urinary tract infections (UTI), brain tumors, the effect of drugs and alcohol, concussion, stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) to name a few. Dementia does not necessarily mean Alzheimer’s. Dementia is a disease symptom. There are over 100 diseases that may cause dementia. These include Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, and dementia with Lewy Bodies. It is important to obtain a medical diagnosis before proceeding with obtaining resources. The following resources are specific to the needs of those who have memory loss due to dementia.
