Abuse Resources_______________________________ Elder abuse is defined as neglect, exploitation, or “painful or harmful” mistreatment of anyone who is 65 or older (or anyone aged 18 to 64 who falls under the legal definition of a “dependent” adult). It can involve physical violence, psychological abuse, isolation, abandonment, abduction, false imprisonment, or a caregiver’s neglect. It could also involve the unlawful taking of a senior’s money or property. Elder abuse involves various crimes, such as theft, assault or identity theft that happen to victims of all ages. However, when the victim is 65 years or older (or a dependent adult), the criminal could face stiffer penalties. The following resources may assist you in following up with suspected abuse. Dementia/Memory Loss Resources________________ See also the sections Caregiver Support Information & Resources , Support Groups , and the Appendix topic Suggestions for New Caregivers. Often the first thought when you hear the term “memory loss” is dementia or Alzheimer's. However, there are many causes of memory loss: stress, lack of sleep, side effects of medication, side effects of medical conditions, urinary tract infections (UTI), brain tumors, the effect of drugs and alcohol, concussion, stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) to name a few. Dementia does not necessarily mean Alzheimer’s. Dementia is a disease symptom. There are over 100 diseases that may cause dementia. These include Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, and dementia with Lewy Bodies. It is important to obtain a medical diagnosis before proceeding with obtaining resources. The following resources are specific to the needs of those who have memory loss due to dementia.
