HOW I DISCOVERED MY PASSION FOR DENTISTRY The Test That Led to a Life’s Work

create safe, long-lasting, beautiful smiles for patients. It was then I knew that cosmetic dentistry would be a major focus of my work. Over the 40-plus years I’ve been in practice, what has mattered most to me is the relationships I’ve developed with my patients and our team at Masterpiece Smiles. Many of the people who’ve walked through our doors have become lifelong friends. The ability to give a person a beautiful new smile that transforms their self-image is a privilege and joy that I never take for granted. Similarly, it’s hard to count all the talented folks who’ve worked here over the years. Helping them develop skills and see them grow is a greater reward than I would’ve ever imagined.

As I entered my junior year of college, I still had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. After entering the University of Kansas on a tennis scholarship, I was focused on academics and athletics but hadn’t seriously considered my career options. Searching for some guidance, I decided to take one of those old-fashioned career aptitude tests. I had no idea what the results would say. When they suggested I pursue a career in dentistry, something immediately clicked. To be honest, becoming a dentist wasn’t even on my radar before I took that test. My brother was an orthopedic surgeon, and I had it gotten into my head that I didn’t want to pursue a career

-Dr. Jan L. Cobble I’m looking forward to sharing this newsletter with you over the coming months. I’d like to think of it as an extension of the warm, friendly conversations we have when you’re in the office. Please help us welcome our newest team member, periodontist Dr. J. Butler! Dr. Butler will be taking care of implants and all your periodontal needs. Call today to schedule an appointment! Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wonderful wife, Susie. We are very active in the Tulsa arts community as supporters of both the Signature Symphony at TCC and the Philbrook Museum of Art. We also love traveling to visit our son, Dane, in Boulder and our daughter, Kristin, in San Francisco. Unfortunately, I can no longer play tennis effectively due to shoulder issues, but I’ve replaced that passion with a love for golf. The only difference is that I’m nowhere near as skilled on the golf course as I was on the tennis court. If I can become one-tenth as good at golf as I was at tennis, I’ll be very happy indeed.

in medicine. Dentistry, however, felt different. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Since then, it’s been full steam ahead. I think aptitude tests have become less common over the years, but whenever I meet a young person who feels directionless, I tell them to give it a shot. It certainly worked for me.

As you can probably tell, my passion for dentistry has only grown over the course of my career. Within the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry (OBD), I’m known as a continuing education junkie. I regularly exceed 100 hours per year traveling to events to learn about the latest advances in dental technology and how to run my practice better. In fact, I was once told by an OBD employee that I had no

If taking that aptitude test was the first moment of clarity about my professional life, I had a second moment over 20 years ago in Las Vegas. I was at the Las Vegas Institute taking some courses in cosmetic dentistry, long before anyone called themselves cosmetic dentists. Seeing the advances on display, I realized that it was now possible to

need to continue reporting my hours. “You know, Dr. Cobble,” she said with a laugh, “you’ve already gone above and beyond the requirement for the year, and it’s June.” What can I say? I just love my profession and never feel like I’ve learned enough.

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Should Last Beyond Thanksgiving

those who regularly practice grateful thinking do reap emotional, physical, and interpersonal benefits. Adults who keep gratitude journals on a regular basis exercise more regularly, report fewer illness symptoms, feel better about their lives as a whole, and are more optimistic about the future.” he mentions the practice of keeping a gratitude journal. This activity is a great way to start seeing the world with a more positive, appreciative eye. As often as you can, take a few minutes to write down the acts, people, and moments that you’re grateful for. Some will be big, others small — but all will have an impact on your mood and bring a smile to your face. Before you know it, you’ll have an entire book full of good memories and warm feelings. HOW TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE In the above quotation from Dr. Emmons,

Taking the time to acknowledge who and what you’re grateful for is a Thanksgiving tradition far more important than turkey or football. It’s the cornerstone of the holiday and the reason we feast together in the first place. But when you really think about it, should expressing our gratitude and appreciation for others be limited to one day every year? Of course not! WHY GRATITUDE MATTERS As we get older, it’s easy to succumb to negativity and pessimism — “Kids these days,” “The world isn’t what it used to be,” etc. The crabby grandparent and angry old neighbor are archetypal depictions of later life. But these fictions don’t have to be your reality. Recognizing and acknowledging gratitude will help you take stock of the positive aspects of your life and dwell less on unhappy thoughts. Being grateful has also been linked to significant health benefits. According to gratitude expert and author Dr. Robert A. Emmons, “Preliminary findings suggest that

gratitude. The easiest one is simply to say “Thanks” whenever you can. It may seem insignificant, but you’d be surprised what a difference it makes. When you approach the world with the perspective that every day is Thanksgiving, it’s only natural to be grateful. We all have moments when we want to curse the world, especially as we get older, and those experiences are perfectly normal. Just as frequently, though, we have moments that are worth celebrating, often with people who are worth appreciating. Which will you think about more?

While keeping a journal is great, there are other ways to go about cultivating and expressing

COSMETIC DENTISTRY 101 The Techniques to Create a Smile You’ll Love

Nobody should feel pressured to make their teeth look a certain way. That said, there’s no denying that our smiles have a huge effect on how we feel about ourselves. Everyone deserves to have a smile they feel good about. If you’ve ever hesitated to smile in photos or flash your pearly whites during a job interview, cosmetic dentistry may be the answer you’ve been looking for. Cosmetic dentistry does not refer to a single procedure, but rather a wide variety of them. It’s broadly defined as any treatment undertaken to improve the appearance of your teeth, including enhancement, restoration, and maintenance. Veneers, aligners, whitening, and other practices could all be used in the course of a cosmetic treatment. At Masterpiece Smiles, we use cutting- edge techniques and advanced materials to give you a beautiful, natural smile and all the benefits that come with it. Because there is no such thing as an ideal smile, we begin your cosmetic treatment plan by talking to you about what you’d like to see in your smile. This conversation is crucial because it’ll help our team come up with a plan that gets you the results you’re looking for. And while our primary goal is to design and create the smile that will allow you to feel your best, we also want to ensure that you are educated about and comfortable with the treatment plan. That comfort will also be a focus of the treatments themselves, since you shouldn’t have to go through a nightmare experience to get a dream smile. While cosmetic dentistry accurately describes the process, it’s a bit of a misnomer when it comes to the impact these procedures can have on a patient’s life. Feeling good about yourself affects every aspect of your life, not just how you look. It’s hard to express your happiness, after all, if you’re uncomfortable with the expression itself. So while the procedures may be cosmetic in nature, their results can lead to deep, long-lasting change that’s as emotional and psychological as it is physical. At Masterpiece Smiles, we take pride in creating customized cosmetic treatment plans that give each a patient a smile they will love. Call us today to find out how we can do the same for you.

4 | Chips, the WWII Hero Dog

The WWII Hero Dog MEET CHIPS

patrolled the Casablanca Conference, where Chips was introduced to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Following the meeting, Rowell and Chips went to Sicily to support the invasion as part of Operation Husky, which was where Chips earned his hero status. On July 10, 1943, Allied soldiers were attacked on the beach by an enemy machine gun team. Chips ran for the hut where the barrage of bullets was coming from and tore into the enemies. His handler described hearing rapid noises and seeing Chips gripping one of the men by his throat until Rowell ordered the dog down. Three more men came out of the hut, their hands raised. Chips left the fight with burns and a scalp wound, but his actions saved the lives of all the men in his platoon, and later that day, he discovered more enemy soldiers. On Jan. 15, 2018 — 75 years after the Casablanca Conference — Chips was posthumously awarded the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals Dickin

War heroes are revered for their acts of bravery in times of combat — and Chips, the shepherd- collie-husky crossbreed, is no different. During World War II, the Wren family donated Chips to Dogs for Defense shortly after the U.S. joined the war. Of the 40,000 dogs donated to the corps, more than 10,000 were selected to participate in the program after training.

Chips was shipped off with his handler, Private Rowell, to French Morocco. Chips and Rowell

Medal, the highest award an animal can achieve for their time in military conflict in Britain.

After his service, Chips returned to live with the Wren family. On U.S. soil, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. These honors were eventually stripped by the Army after a policy barred animals from earning the same medals as people, but his platoon awarded him the Theater Ribbon and battle stars for his eight campaigns. To the men Chips saved, medals didn’t make him a hero — his selfless actions did.
