A well-designed kitchen island
Adding an island to your kitchen is an exci- ting project. However, it has to be well- designed in order to meet all your require-
ments, whether you purchased it ready-made in a big box store, assembled it according to a plan, or had it custom-made.
kitchen designers are 60 x 90 cm. The ideal height should be the same as that of a stan- dard work surface, i.e. 90 cm. If you’re plan- ning on using the island as an eating area, the height of any stools should be at least 30 cm lower than the worktop. COMPONENTS Lastly, it is important to determine if you want the island to include components that require the services of a plumber or an elec- trician to install, such as sink, dishwasher, cooktop and exhaust fan, wine cellar, or built-in microwave oven. Now is also the time to think about maximizing the potential of this new work zone with the addition of storage modules, including drawers, cabinets, and sli- ding shelves.
POSITIONING Unless you’re lucky enough to have a very large kitchen, an island is really only appro- priate for an open area. For the kitchen to be functional, you should plan for 107 cm of clearance between the island and the cabinets in order to be able to circulate freely and be able to easily open the fridge and stove doors. If space is limited, another option is to plan the island as an extension of the cabinets. Designers would call this a peninsula. DIMENSIONS A kitchen island has to be sufficiently large to fulfill its main purpose, which is to extend the available work surface for food preparation. The minimum dimensions recommended by
