This week, the ‘ New York Times ’ saw fit to publish an article entitled ‘So, Human Resources Is Making You Miserable?’ Nothing really new there, and social media was ablaze with this! Key themes were: HR managers were feeling overwhelmed (probably because they’ve involved themselves with too much.) More disputes among colleagues, leading to more HR involvement (procedures shouldn’t necessarily mean that HR is the point of call) Employees view HR as being on ‘management’s side’ so can’t be trusted. (HR should be seeing that the policies and legislation are evenly applied. It’s not a question of sides.) I do recognise that there are notable differences between US and Europe/UK HR, one being that HR seems to intervene much more in employee matters instead of line management or directors. So, if they are the ones bringing news of firing or redundancies, or communicating rules such as Return to Office, it’s no wonder the function gets a bad rap! 9.45 am I spoke with my four people as a group over Google Meet and then individually, finishing just around lunchtime. Two were in the office and two based remotely today. The team supervisor heads off on holiday on Wednesday, so it will be handover time tomorrow – luckily, it’s a quiet time! 4.38 pm I replied to all emails and produced a first draft on Right to Disconnect, which I will re-read tomorrow. My To-Do list was done, so I logged off and went off to make some tea. Glancing through the kitchen window, I noticed how well the rose bushes had done while I was away.
