This is yet another stark reminder that the payroll industry is increasingly becoming a cyber target in 2024: a recent data breach impacting over 225,000 UK military personnel highlights the significant cyber and infosec risks when working with payroll service providers.
This particular breach, reported earlier in the year, resulted in unauthorised access to highly sensitive information, including names and bank account details of current, former, and reserve
members of the Army, Navy, and RAF. The incident happened via a company contracted by the UK Ministry of Defence to manage payroll services.
