The course not only gave her the UCAS points she needed for university, but also built her confidence in academic writing and prepared her for the demands of higher-level study. Shannon highlights the engaging lessons, supportive tutors, and dedicated study spaces as key to her success as a mature learner. Now firmly on track to achieve her dream career and having secured a place at a prestigious Red Brick University, Shannon reflects: “Returning to education can be daunting, but it has been so worth it.”
ALAN PLASTERING LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA Alan joined the Plastering Level 1 Diploma to boost his construction knowledge and pick up a new trade. NOT CURRENTLY EMPLOYED If you are currently unemployed and are in receipt of an eligible state benefit, you may be able to receive full funding for your tuition fees in order to study up to and including eligible Level 3 programmes. State benefits refer to Universal Credit, Job Seekers Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance. If in receipt of other state benefits, this may be considered, depending on your individual circumstances.

FIND OUT MORE
The construction industry plays a key role in Lancashire’s economy and remains a priority sector. With a £2 billion government boost to the Affordable Homes Programme, demand for house building skills is set to rise — but a major skills shortage within the sector poses a challenge. The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) estimates over 250,000 additional workers will be required by 2028 to meet demand. At Preston College, we offer courses for both aspiring and current construction professionals. Whether you’re looking to enhance DIY skills, learn a new trade alongside full-time employment, or pursue a career change, our Level 1 courses provide the perfect starting point.
If you’re already working in the sector, we offer Level 2 Diplomas, Green Skills courses, and NVQs from Level 2 to Level 7. We also offer HNCs, and Institute of Technology (IoT) courses designed to take your skills to the next level. Preston College’s hybrid learning approach combines weekly practical sessions held in college, with online guided self-study, allowing you to fit your studies around existing work and family commitments. All our programmes are continually updated to align with industry-standards, ensuring you are well-prepared to contribute to the sector’s growth and success.

FRANCESCA FOUNDATION DEGREE PERSON CENTRED COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY After running a wedding and events business, Francesca felt ready for a more fulfilling career and was inspired by her own experience with therapy to pursue counselling. As a mum of three returning to education, she chose Preston College for its supportive atmosphere and clear progression route. Starting at Level 2, she is now in her first year of the Foundation Degree in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy, and preparing for her first placement – working with real clients. Beyond academic learning, Francesca has grown in confidence and self-worth, sharing, “The support, community, and hands-on experience have been invaluable.” With aspirations to open her own private practice, Francesca adds, “The counselling courses at Preston College have breathed new life into me and given me a renewed sense of purpose.”
NEAL COUNSELLING (FAST TRACK) LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE Neal, a professional actor, director, and writer in the film, TV, and stage industry, enrolled on the Counselling (Fast Track) course, seeking a new challenge and a more secure, fulfilling future. Neal enjoys the person-centred approach of the course, which allows him to reflect and develop personally. PETER WATERCOLOURS & PAINTING
Following retirement and keen to change his lifestyle after an illness diagnosis, Peter enrolled on the Painting & Watercolours course at Preston College. He saw it as the perfect opportunity to develop his artistic skills, meet like-minded people, and establish his own unique painting style. Peter describes the course as well-structured, offering a balanced mix of theory, demonstrations, and personalised tutor support. Throughout the course he has gained focus, patience, and a deeper understanding of technique and process. “I’ve received excellent support from both the tutor and fellow students, and I’ve noticed a real improvement in my confidence and abilities,” he says. Now feeling more ambitious and confident with his projects, Peter plans to continue his creative journey by enrolling on the course again. “It’s a fantastic way to kick- start your journey with watercolours and build on your creativity.”
JOANNE & ISABEL CAKE BAKING
Joanne and Isabel, a mother-daughter duo, joined the cake baking course at Preston College for enjoyment and to expand their baking skills beyond the few cakes they usually make. The 9-week course gave them the chance to try new recipes, learn decorating techniques, and enjoy baking together in a friendly, social setting. They have particularly enjoyed baking alongside others, chatting, laughing, and sharing the experience, making the course both fun and educational. Both praise the tutor’s clear guidance and support, along with the College’s great communication and easy parking. While they don’t plan to pursue baking professionally, they’re keen to continue taking courses for personal enjoyment. Joanne and Isabel comment: “It’s not only a fantastic way to improve baking skills but also a great opportunity to meet new people and boost mental wellbeing after a busy day at work.”
