WELCOME

Dear ZIPD Conference Participant,

It is my honor to welcome you to the 2025 Zeigler Institute for Professional Development (ZIPD) Conference as we celebrate 15 years of excellence, growth, and impact. Since the very first conference in 2011, ZIPD has reflected the same spirit that inspired our It Starts With Us campaign—a belief that lasting change begins when dedicated individuals come together to create opportunity. What began as a bold vision from Bloomsburg alumni Terry ’76 and JoAnn Schultz Zeigler ’77, in partnership with business faculty and university leadership, has grown into an incredibly enriching experience that has prepared more than 16,000 students to step confidently into their futures. At the heart of Terry Zeigler’s vision was a simple but powerful idea—helping students discover where their skills and interests intersect so they can identify the right career path before graduation. He often describes this as a sense of connectedness —understanding how the many facets of business and industry work together, and how each student’s unique strengths fit within that larger picture. That philosophy continues to guide ZIPD today, empowering students to align their passions with purpose and turn potential into professional success. Each year, this conference brings accomplished alumni and industry professionals back to campus to mentor, inspire, and empower our students. That shared commitment—to give back, to lift others, to open doors—has transformed ZIPD into far more than a professional development program. It’s a movement that demonstrates what’s possible when Huskies unite around a common purpose. As we honor 15 years of the ZIPD Conference, we also celebrate the countless ways it continues to shape leaders, strengthen our community, and advance the promise of a CU education. Together, we’re preparing the next generation to lead with pride and purpose—because it truly does start with us.

Jeffery L. Osgood, Jr. PhD MPA President (interim) Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania

On behalf of the Zeigler College of Business at Commonwealth University, it is my privilege to welcome you to this year’s milestone conference. For 15 years, the ZIPD Program has been a cornerstone of our mission to prepare students not only for successful careers, but also for meaningful lives of leadership, service, and impact. ZIPD is more than a program—it is an experience that equips our students with The Zeigler Edge . Through hands-on professional development, direct engagement with industry leaders, and a network of mentors and peers, our students graduate with the confidence, skills, and vision to thrive in an ever- changing business world. This transformative experience would not be possible without the extraordinary generosity, vision, and dedication of Terry and JoAnn Zeigler. Their unwavering support has fueled the growth of ZIPD and elevated the Zeigler College of Business to national distinction. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to our students, our university, and the communities we serve. As you take part in the sessions, panels, and conversations ahead, we invite you to embrace the spirit of discovery and collaboration that defines ZIPD. Together, we celebrate 15 years of impact and look forward to building an even stronger future for our students and partners.

Welcome—and enjoy the conference!

Todd A. Shawver Dean, Zeigler College of Business

Welcome to Commonwealth University’s 2025 Ziegler Institute for Professional Development.

Celebrating the 15th year of this Business Conference is amazing! Over time we’ve seen the ZIPD Conference grow from the early years of 40+ alumni, mostly from the PA area, to today where hundreds of our alumni from all over the world will be in attendance. As Commonwealth University students from Bloomsburg, Mansfield and Lock Haven, you might wonder why all of these professionals representing small, medium size and very large national and international corporations are returning to campus for this Business Conference. I’ve thought about this over the years and have narrowed it down, in my opinion, to a few main reasons. In no particular order, it’s an opportunity to come “home” and share what they’ve experienced over the years since graduation with alumni and friends, our fantastic Faculty and our Administration. It’s also a chance to network with other alums and the Companies where they are working. But, the overall biggest reason our alums are returning is for all of YOU, our current students. Years ago, prior to the ZIPD Conference, it was at times difficult to think beyond college, and what was it like to live, work and excel in areas of this country that we had never personally experienced. Many of our returning alums experienced this and they are here to tell all of you that it’s OK. They are here to help all of you prepare for life beyond this University. They are here to talk about their jobs, past and present and their goals. There are so many pathways in business that you have probably not heard about, but these alums carry this knowledge. Therefore, over the next few days, try to attend as many sessions as possible. Try to attend as many small and large discussions as possible and reach out to as many of these distinguished alums that you can. Network, network, network… They are here to help! These alums also know the value of a Commonwealth University education. Thanks to our very professional and dedicated Zeigler College of Business professors, our Dean and administrators, and the Commonwealth University administration, you have the tools to become successful in whatever field(s) you wish to pursue. But, the most important tool that each of you possess is YOU. Companies today are looking for smart, hungry, competitive, inquisitive, honest, and passionate hard workers. Companies need your help to make them the best and a Commonwealth University education, and most importantly, all of you, provide that advantage. Therefore, during this conference, network with these professionals and let them know that you possess these skills, and many more, and that you are the advantage these companies need. Show them your confidence!!!

Robert Moore

Board Chair, Zeigler College of Business Advisory Board

Thank you and remember, you all have many people out there that are ready to help.

Becky Toth Director, ZIPD

Welcome from the ZIPD Director Hello ZIPD participants,

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 15th Anniversary of the ZIPD Conference! It has been both a joy and an honor to help plan this year’s conference, and a privilege to continue the legacy built by the dedicated ZIPD Directors who came before me. This conference plays a vital role in the career development of our students. We are deeply grateful for the time, expertise, and energy you bring to this event. Here, students learn, they connect, and they grow. The opportunities that emerge are truly limitless—and that is thanks to you. I also want to extend heartfelt gratitude to Terry and JoAnn Zeigler. Their vision and unwavering support have shaped the ZIPD program and this conference into what I can only describe as “Excellence.” Our students are inspired to gain the Zeigler Edge, and I see its impact every single day. Employers notice it too—often remarking on the difference they see when ZIPD students interview, network, and step confidently into professional settings.

ZIPD is a true difference-maker for student success, and together, we celebrate its lasting influence today.

Thank you for being here, and welcome to this special anniversary celebration!

Mike Tidwell, Dean of the College of Business, and I started a dialogue in 2010 about new and evolving ways to teach business. I pushed to shift the curriculum sequence and content to introduce students to the big picture of running a business earlier in their course selection, hoping to show that all elements of a business are interconnected while providing a better understanding of the importance of each course. Talking through employers’ needs, Mike also wanted to add soft skills development so that graduates would be immediately productive. Mike put together a team of five fully engaged professors, built a comprehensive plan to meet the objectives we discussed and presented that plan to me along with a rather large price tag. He said that if I would fund it, he and his team would build and deliver it. I agreed and made the donation in mid-2011 with the proviso that the first business conference would occur in the 2011 fall semester. And so, it began. Fifteen years later and shifting through evolving leadership, the program continues to grow and improve, constantly adapting to the changing landscape of education and business needs. We knew ZIPD would benefit the students and hoped that it would engage faculty and staff but were completely surprised by the impact and participation of BU alumni who continue to enthusiastically support ZIPD, making it the signature program for alumni engagement at BU and confirming that everything about a well-run operation is indeed interconnected. What we have learned over the 15 years from companies hiring students is that these soft skills matter to employers as much as the standard curriculum. Companies have hired students right at the ZIPD Conference, which is certainly a measure of success. Going forward, ZIPD is being deployed across the three Commonwealth campuses and hopefully will gravitate to the community colleges. My wife JoAnn and I tell people that when we attend this conference, not only do we experience an extraordinary energy level, but we also see the participating students as the best that CU has to offer. I believe that ZIPD gives these students a significant advantage over other graduates as they enter the workforce. On a personal note, participating in ZIPD has consistently enriched my life, and I hope that all ZIPD participants enjoy a high level of personal satisfaction and value.
