A simple plan can save someone’s life! Pray to God for help. “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6). If everyone does their part, God will help do the rest. The Bible outlines the rules Christians need to follow to ensure success. If His people pray for help, and search the Scriptures, they will find the answers they need to be successful in raising their chil- dren. God doesn’t tell His potential children to – “Train up a child in the way he should go…” (Proverbs 22:6) and not show them how to do it with their own children. Anytime parents deal with kids they should be careful not to neglect prayer and study – parents need to be close to God in order to have success. A Christian’s children should be out- standing among young people in the world today. God’s people can raise them correctly if they utilize the prin- ciples outlined in God’s Word—the Bible. Children in the Church can be a light, and godly example, in a dark world. Parents must start now rear- ing their children the right way. It’s a God-given responsibility! ■
both short and long term goals. Par- ents must assist them to discover their abilities and talents by allowing them to try different things. Wheth - er it is art, music, study or sports, children need to have opportunities. With every opportunity parents must provide encouragement and compli- ment their accomplishments. Espe- cially when children are learning a new skill—encouragement always works best! Parents shouldn’t mini - mize their child’s worries and fears, rather they should encourage them to conquer them!
out. In difficult situations it is import - ant to consider both sides of the story and get the facts, before jumping to conclusions. God instructs in Prov- erbs 18:13: “He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.” As a family—be prepared You may have heard the say- ing—“luck favors those who are pre- pared?” This is not a coincidence. Do little children know how to dial 911? What is the plan if a house fire breaks out? What if a burglar attacks? Every family should have a plan. Parents should discuss what should be done in each circumstance regardless of who is home. What’s the plan in the case of a tornado, or an earthquake? If shopping in a crowded store and families get separated, do the chil- dren know what to do? If hiking and someone gets lost – what’s the plan? (Example: When lost or in distress, signal in 3’s – three shots, three shouts, 3 blasts of a whistle, 3 horn blasts, etc.) Do all of the members of the family know basic survival tech- niques? Does everyone in the family know how to signal S.O.S.? In James 2:14, the principle is explained: “What does it profit, my breth - ren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him”
Listen to them Parents must keep the doors of com- munication open with their children. Families should sit down together for at least one meal a day. The ad- age, “God gave us one mouth and two ears for a reason” carries some weight. Listening is a skill that we must all develop, and we can learn a lot by listening to what our children have to say. Their insight is often surprising. If parents need to correct their children, there may be occa- sions where they need to hear them
