TRAILBLAZER IN JUSTICE: Katherine Fernandez Rundle’s Legacy of Reform and Resilience In the heart of Miami-Dade, where cultures converge and communities strive for equity, Katherine Fernandez Rundlehas spent over three decades redefining justice. A proud Cuban-American and the first Hispanic and first woman to serve as State Attorney in Florida, Fernandez Rundle has built a legacy rooted in innovation, compassion, and accountability. A Lifelong Commitment to Service Born in Washington, D.C., and raised with strong Cuban roots, Fernandez Rundle’s journey into law began with a passion for justice and a desire to make a difference in underserved communities. She earned degrees in Criminology from the University of Miami and a law degree from the University of Cambridge in England, an international education that shaped her nuanced view of justice. Before stepping into the role of State Attorney, she served for 15 years under then-State Attorney Janet Reno, including time as Chief Assistant and Legal Counsel to the Grand Jury. When Reno left to become U.S. Attorney General, Fernandez Rundle was appointed to take her place, a role she has held with distinction ever since. Reform Through “Smart Justice” Under Fernandez Rundle’s leadership, Miami-Dade became a national model for “Smart Justice”, a system that emphasizes rehabilitation, prevention, and public trust. She pioneered the country’s first Drug Court, followed by Mental Health and Veterans Courts, as well as programs to reduce truancy, domestic violence, and elder abuse. Her office also runs Florida’s only prosecutor-led Child Support Enforcement Office, handling more than 65,000 cases annually and recovering over $1 billion in support for children and families. Her signature Second Chance Seal & Expunge Program helps eligible individuals clear their records, providing monthly workshops to guide people through the process and support reintegration into society. A Champion for the Vulnerable Fernandez Rundle has long been an advocate for the voiceless: survivors of human trafficking, victims of gun violence, and working families facing impossible choices. Through the Human Trafficking Task Force, her office collaborates with law enforcement and nonprofit agencies to rescue victims and prosecute perpetrators with vigor. Meanwhile, embedded prosecutors in violence-prone

neighborhoods help build trust and improve safety from within. And she’s just as invested in the future, launching school-based initiatives and youth mentorship programs that aim to steer young people away from the justice system before they ever come in contact with it. Leading with Vision Now in her eighth term, Fernandez Rundle continues to lead one of the largest prosecutor’s offices in the U.S. She was the first woman to serve as President of the Cuban American Bar Association and has been inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame for her lasting contributions. Her work has helped drive a significant decline in crime across Miami-Dade, while maintaining some of Florida’s lowest jail incarceration and prison admission rates. For many in the Latino community, Katherine Fernandez Rundle is more than a public official, she is a symbol of resilience, reform, and leadership that listens.

Tamryn Gets to Walk Again after Deep Brain Stimulation Treatment at Nicklaus Children's

Tamryn, age 9, was a regular boy who enjoyed swimming and biking when he suddenly began to experience stiffness throughout his body. Over the last two years, his condition worsened to the point that he could no longer control his movements or walk. The Tallahassee native’s family sought the care of specialists throughout the state until they were connected to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Brain Institute and its Neuromotor clinic, where they found answers. Tamryn was diagnosed with TOR1-A Torsion Dystonia Type 1, a rare movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions and abnormal movements to the point that he lost the ability to walk. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s neurosurgery team implanted a Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) on Tamryn, a device that essentially works as a pacemaker for the brain to help control abnormal movements.

The device called Percept RC by Medtronic is currently the smallest and thinnest neurostimulator available for Deep Brain Stimulation. Unlike older models of DBS, this device is rechargeable with a battery lasting up to 15 years. Older models only last 2-3 years for patients with dystonia requiring them to undergo surgery for replacements. Nicklaus Children’s has the most comprehensive program in the state utilizing deep brain stimulation in children. This work is led by Dr. Toba Niazi, Chief of Neurosurgery and Co- Director of the Brain Institute and Dr. Migvis Monduy, Director of the NeuroMotor Center, who brought together a team of specialists from across the hospital to care for Tamryn. After only 6 months of treatment, Tamryn was showing signs of improvement and nearly a year later, he was back to running, jumping, biking, and doing all the things boys his age enjoy. Tamryn’s mother, Tamara said “He told us he felt like a real boy again, and to us, that was the best gift.”

CATALYSTS FOR GOOD Non-Profit Stories The SFLHCC Foundation was established in 1995 with the intention of giving minority students the opportunity to pursue their goals of earning a top-notch education. It provides financial assistance to underprivileged minority students (African Americans and Hispanics) who originate from low-income households. Scholarship money is awarded to a chosen group of students, which is then transferred straight to their preferred college. Students who wish to continue receiving scholarships must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis. The Education Enhancement Fellowship Program, the Scholarship Program, and the Internship Program are the three programs that make up the Foundation. THE SFLHCC FOUNDATION

minority students within the county to meet with influential businessmen and women around the nation. Applicants are selected by a committee after submitting an essay, undergoing a personal interview with the organization’s selection committee, and receiving a recommendation from their professors. These students must demonstrate a commitment to hard work and study. The fellowship program carefully selects students for an all-expenses paid out-of-state conferences with top speakers from big corporations in different states of the nation. The objective is to facilitate relationships between the business leaders and the students. In these out-of-state workshops with top company executives, students learn the basic steps to becoming business leaders and community builders by learning how to engage and contribute to the continuous growth and revitalization of their respective communities. The fellows later, once in Miami, attend workshops to speak about their experiences before the leadership of the organization demonstrating the personal and educational growth experienced. These students are provided with the necessary tools to see what it is like to be in the real business world.

EDUCATION ENHANCEMENT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC), in collaboration with esteemed partners Southwest Airlines and TD Bank, has pioneered an initiative aimed at nurturing the academic and professional aspirations of high school students in Miami- Dade County Public Schools.
