Storm wind steals new roof
Break-ins and thefts The Hawkesbury OPP is investigating a theft of two Holstein Heifers cows that oc- curred sometime overnight between September 2 and 3. The investigation suggests that someone accessed the cow pen of the farm situated on Concession 5 near Hunter Road. The pen contained 10 cows and the thieves stole two. A break-in was reported in the evening of August 26 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Someone accessed a Berthiaume Street residence by breaking in through a window. The resident heard a noise but found no one. He nonetheless noticed that someone gained entry through a window and left with a 36-inch Panasonic television. A break-in was reported in the morning of August 27 at approximately 10 a.m. Someone accessed a Main Street apartment sometime overnight by breaking in through a window. The investigation revealed that someone gained entry through a window and left with a 32-inch Samsung television and a Sony VCR. Officer catches thief in the act An OPP constable was on patrol on McGill Street on Wednesday, August 27, shortly before midnight, when he noticed a 2002 Dodge Durango towing a utility trailer that had no lights connected. The truck and trailer tandem was being driven at a high rate of speed northbound on McGill Street. The officer noticed the speeding vehicle, pas- sing on the right lane, a vehicle that was stopped at the red light at the intersection of McGill Street and Spence Avenue and consequently burned the red light. The officer went after the vehicle to investigate further. The suspicious vehicle was stopped on Nelson Street East near McGill Street. The investigation revealed that the trailer had just been stolen from a storage lot on Highway 34 just south of Hawkesbury. Tools that can assist in a break-in were found in the possession of the suspect. Marijuana was also found. Jean-François Lemieux (39 yrs) of Laval was charged. He is scheduled for a court appearance on October 15, in L’Orignal.
County Road 16 in the village of Riceville. He has a second house under renovation, which he had over from the Ottawa area. The house was close to finished with the new roof completed. After the storm had passed, Down came out and had a look around “The wind was atrocious,” he said. “Trees were down everywhere in town.” All the roofing work on his second house also came to naught. Part of the roof was in the yard and part of it dropped down inside the building, leaving the interior open to the rain and causing water damage. There is no house insurance yet for the premises so Down said he’d just have to accept the extra cost and focus on getting back to work and getting the house finished before winter.

RICEVILLE | Nature decided to make things «interesting» for Tyler Down with his house renovation project. The thunder storm that roared through Eastern Ontario at the start of the Sept. 5 weekend set back Down’s work schedule when the wind blew up over The Nation municipality and other parts of Prescott- Russell early last Friday evening. “I was splitting firewood in the back yard,” said Down during a Monday phone inter- view. “The sky turned black west of town so I went inside.” Down sheltered inside his main house on

A late-summer windstorm took the roof off of a house under construction in Riceville. The winds and following thunderstorm which blew through Eastern Ontario also dropped a few trees here and there throughout the region.
Hit-and-run arrest Police have closed the file on a hit-and-run case inWendover with the arrest of an Ottawa man. Brian Dorion, 34, is charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and fai- ling to stop and remain at an accident scene involving bodily harm. The charges followed three weeks of police investigation of a hit-and-run incident Aug. 18 on County Road 17 in Wendover between an eastbound Kia and a blue two-door Mazda 3, also headed east. The Mazda made an illegal pass on the right of the Kia, hit the car, making it lose control and veer onto the westbound lane into the path of an oncoming truck. The woman driving the Kia was treated for serious injuries and remains in hospital at present. Dorion is in custody pending a Sept. 10 bail hearing in provincial court in L’Orignal.
