study that examined the different approaches manufacturers take in making investment decisions. “As manufacturers continue to evolve, the nature of work and skills must adapt to meet the needs of the changing indus- try,” said NAM Chief Economic and Director for the Center of Manufacturing Research Chad Moutray. “Manufacturing lead- ers must prioritize investments to best position their compa- nies in a competitive marketplace and set themselves up for

success over the long term. Three investment prior- ities emerged across manufacturer size and indus- try: increasing throughput and lowering costs where possible, creating new opportunities for growth, and building a stronger, more resilient workforce. Nearly all the companies we interviewed emphasized the importance of investing in their workforce.” The study consisted of an online survey and in- depth interviews of manufacturing leaders from June to August 2023. Making Priorities When asked about their top priorities for current dollars, nearly 74 percent of manufacturers report- ed building a robust and trained workforce as a key area for investment, which fits in with the larger macroeconomic conditions of the tight labor mar- ket and shortage of available workers. When business leaders were asked how they would spend a marginal $1 million, 61.5 percent would invest in new equipment. These findings point toward a desire to make smart investments that will transform operations and the production process, while also ensuring that the workforce can adapt to such changes. Additional areas of focus for marginal dollar in-
vestment included investing in improved processes and operations (60.2 percent), optimizing existing equipment (53.4 percent), investing in new equip- ment (51.7 percent), investing in new technologies (46.6 percent) and research and development (44.9 percent). When considering their future growth strategies, manufacturers identified a stronger domestic econ- omy for growing sales (69.5 percent), increased ef- ficiencies in the production process (67.8 percent) and maintaining a robust and trained workforce (67.0 percent) as the most significant factors in con- tributing to expansion.

Meaningful reductions were also achieved in ozone depletion (13 percent), energy usage (13 percent), water usage (18 percent), acid rain (41 percent), smog (44 percent), respiratory effects (54 percent) and eutrophication, which leads to algae blooms and dead zones in bodies of water (30 percent). The industry’s progress was attained through en- ergy improvements, strong recycling infrastructure, sustainably managed forests, and an ongoing com- mitment to improvement. The industry continues to shift to cleaner- burning fuel, has increased its par- ticipation in a greener U.S. electric grid and made investments in energy efficiency. Driving Progress The introduction of new, fresh fibers from sustain- ably managed forests drives the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The use of old cor- rugated containers (OCC) has also contributed to the avoidance of carbon dioxide and methane emis- sions from landfills. This combination of both new, fresh fibers, and recycled fibers maximizes fiber re- use and enables circularity. Much of this progress is also driven by the sustainability commitments of companies in the industry.
The corrugated packaging industry has achieved substantial reductions in the environmental impacts of a corrugated cardboard box according to a new life cycle assessment (LCA). The study shows a 50 percent per unit reduction in greenhouse gas emis- sions between 2006 and 2020, tackling the most ur- gent and predominant causes of changing climate. The LCA, conducted for the Corrugated Packaging Alliance (CPA) by Anthesis and the National Coun- cil for Air and Stream Improvement with third-party review by the Athena Institute, analyzed the cradle- to-grave circular life cycle of an average corrugated cardboard box made in the U.S. in 2020. It esti- mated impacts to land, air and water-based upon the new materials, manufacturing of those materials into products, the distribution/transportation and use of the products, and the end-of-life. “Reducing carbon emissions is the most important thing we can do for a more sustainable future,” said CPA Executive Director Bob McIlvaine. “Addition- al improvements in land, air and water indicators highlight the industry’s progress and reaffirm our long-standing commitment to sustainable manufac- turing across operations.”

ACTEGA Consolidates In Brazil
smart SOLUTIONS
Sustained solutions to your most pressing pressroom concerns.
ACTEGA, manufacturer of specialty coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants and compounds for the printing and packaging industries, has consolidated its three Brazilian sites into a new 22,500-square-meter fa- cility in Araçariguama, São Paulo. The production and R&D site is the result of a major investment of $7 million. ACTEGA has appointed Ronaldo Begnossi as new Managing Director of ACTEGA do Brasil. Begnossi, an experienced industrial leader with a Chemical Production Engineering degree and an executive MBA in Industrial Management, has a career span- ning 25 years and brings extensive strategic, mana- gerial, and board experience to ACTEGA do Brazil. Company Mergers In 2019, ACTEGA merged the administration, production, and R&D activities of its two Brazilian sites in Guarulhos and Barueri into the new site in Araçariguama. With an investment of around $2 million and a total area of 12,000 square meters at that time, the new location had explicitly invested in new high-performance dispersion units for the printing ink production and corresponding equip- ment for the production of water-based coatings. While the existing building was subsequently ex- panded once again to accommodate and strength- en the sealants business for two- and three-piece cans, ACTEGA’s third Brazilian site in Santana de Parnaíba has now also been integrated into the new location. This represents a capacity expansion of another 10,500 square meters. These additional in- vestments account for $5 million. The new overall site will serve as a hub for the company’s administrative, production and R&D activities. MCC Acquires Stephanos Karydakis IML Multi-Color Corporation (MCC) has acquired Stephanos Karydakis IML SA, Athens, Greece, a provider of in-mold label (IML) products. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The new business will be known as MCC Karydakis. IML is a high-growth labeling technology in which pre-printed labels are inserted into a packaging mold during a container’s manufacturing process, creating a fully recyclable, cost-effective, durable and consistent product.
