Is this actually the city of Rome or some religious system which will be destroyed?" A. The word Babylon comes from "Babel." You remember the con fusion which surrounded that ill- fated edifice. The principle here is not to be found necessarily in a literal city but is representative of a confusion of belief and doctrine. Therefore Babylon is primarily a religious system which would in clude all forms of false religions. Read the preceding chapter as well to get a better idea of what is in volved. Kings have consistently had a relation with false religions in every country of the world. They use evil teachings to further their own selfish goals and ambitions (Rev. 18:9).
