Alliance Title: Systems change, equity, and the role of philanthropy serving organizations Link: Click Here Big Picture: Eddie Torres, President & CEO of Grantmakers in the Arts, shares thoughts on the United Philanthropy Forum’s excellent 2020 Forum Virtual Conference, which brings together Philanthropy Serving Organizations (PSOs) to share examples of how they are working to support, strengthen, and lead the grantmaking community. Key Takeaways: 1. Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, who presented as part of the conference, articulates the roots of the struggle to embrace equitable practices. The concept he shared is that of assimilationist racism: the belief that the adverse social outcomes for BIPOC communities are somehow the result of their cultural inadequacy, which can be fixed by white people or through proximity to white people or through the adoption of white norms. 2. The majority of the PSOs’ survey respondents said their funding or work in climate, health, and equity had a focus on specific disproportionately impacted populations, with over 70% specifying low-income communities and over 60% specifying communities of color. 3. When foundations were asked to what degree their climate, health, and equity funding strategy focused on supporting organizations that had leadership and decision- making (majority of board or staff) from disproportionately impacted communities or populations, less than 40% reported that this was either fully part of their funding strategy focus or a majority of their funding focus.

Big Picture: Council on Foundations new strategic direction and priorities will center on building trust. The new shift was based on the following challenge - The more each of us in the philanthropic community tries to do alone, the less we end up doing to earn the trust of others. That’s because the more we try to own or control, the less we let others in to contribute. That leads to inequities and lack of trust. And that’s a problem. Regional Associations: Regional associations of grantmakers are nonprofit membership associations of private and community foundations, corporations, individuals, and others committed to strengthening philanthropy in the geographic areas they operate within the United States. 3. Academic Centers of Philanthropy: University-based centers primarily located within institutions of higher education that provide training, research, tools, and other resources that help foster the education and advancement of the philanthropic sector. 4. Philanthropic Support Organizations: Organizations that provide various services that help support and strengthen the philanthropic infrastructure. 5. Nonprofit Policy Organizations: Tax-exempt organizations whose mission supports a wide spectrum of policy issues that affect philanthropy. 6. Nonprofit Infrastructure Organizations: Tax-exempt organizations that provide a variety of services that help strengthen the nonprofit sector.
