world—the supreme. Guide, Counselor, and Teacher in all that concerns your fellow ship with God from its. very commence ment ? January 20— “ Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, he strong” (1 Cor. 16:13). Let there be always a real line of com munication between God and yourself through Jesus Christ, that He may im part to you moment by moment the strength to do His will. It is essential to remember that our resources are not in ourselves, or in any material things, not in committees, not in churches, not in so cieties* not anywhere here ; our resources are in what the apostle says. Be strong in the grace. Be strong in the Holy Ghost. Draw upon your heavenly re sources in Christ.—E m H. Tyldéman Chilvers. —o— January 21— “And the seven years o f famine began to come. . . . And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph” (Genesis 41:53-57). How would you like to be such that in time o f need every one would confidently turn to you for help, and never be disap-! pointed? That is exactly what God in -: tends you should be. It simply requires that you let the "Source of every good supply replace you with Himself, and ; then pour Himself out in a lavish stream of omnipotent helpfulness to others, all the time. That was Joseph’s secret'of never-failing helpfulness to all who came to him: God was his life. God worked out this great grain administration ; Jo-

the King, we find that it is truly for rest about the point to which it refers. And if we would go on taking the King’s word about every single thing, we should always find it, then and there, “ for rest.” Every flutter o f unrest may, if we look honestly into it, be traced to not entirely and absolutely taking the King’s word. His words are enough for rest at all times, and in all circumstances; there fore we are sinning the great sin o f un belief whenever we allow ourselves to remain in any phase of unrest. It is not infirmity, but sin, to neglect to make use of the promises which He meant for our strong consolation. We lean upon the word of the King for everlasting life, why not for daily life also? For it shall now be for rest; only try it today, “now,” and see if it shall be so. When He says “perfect peace,” He cannot mean im perfect peace. “The people rested them selves upon the word o f Hezekiah king o f Judah.” Just so simply let us rest upon the words of our King, Jesus ! —Frances R. Havergal. -—o— January 19— “ The Comforter . . . . shall teach you all things” (John 14:26). The Comforter to Come was to be in them—with a complete access to their inner man of which they should be con scious; perfectly acquainted with their spirit’s life, able to apply the redemption of Jesus to the very springs o f thought and motive, and taking effective and blessed oversight o f all the processes o f grace. Have you ever distinctly realized that the Holy Spirit in you is to be to you what the Saviour was to His dis ciples when He was with them in the

New Year B y G. M . H u d s o n A Glad New Year! Far-reaching and worldwide, The gracious memory o f Christmastide W e yield unto the Past; e’ en as with heart And mind refreshed and strength renewed we start With finer courage on life’s road again. W e know not what of sorrow, joy, or pain Awaits us in the days that lie ahead, Nor whither leads this unknown path we tread. I For some, the common round and homely cares; For some, the sunlit way and balmy airs; For some, Love’s blossoming; for others, loss; For many, sacrifice; for most, a cross. And yet the gifts o f life so wond’rous are, Where shadows fall there also gleams a star, And like as Nature in her winter rest Hides close the seeds o f springtime in her breast, May not our seeming ill the casket prove Where yet are hid fresh tokens o f God’s love? And thus believing shall the days unfold As some sweet flower with calyx all o f gold, Till once again the Christmas chimes ring clear In joyous crowning o f a gladsome year.
