OCTOBER 2020
I f you know me, you know look a little different. The big question on everyone’s mind is, “How are we going to have a safe Halloween?” Is it even possible? It’s one of those things we have to take one day at a time. The closer we get to Halloween, the better we’ll be able to gauge the situation. Right now, I can tell you one thing: Halloween is a staple in our household, so we aren’t about to let a virus put Halloween is one of my favorite days of the year. This year, however, things are going to a damper on our fun. We just have to figure out how to celebrate the occasion while still staying safe. Luckily, Halloween is all about wearing masks, so that alone is good news. Maybe we’ll find a way to incorporate masks into
our costumes. There are certainly many options. I imagine there are going to be quite a few doctors and ninjas this year (and I imagine many adults will be dressing up as bottles of Corona beer). I can’t yet say what our costumes will be this year. Normally, we try to coordinate them as a family, and we’d know by now (we usually start brainstorming ideas over the summer), but this year is different, to say the least. Right now, our daughter Jade is really into creating her own superhero characters. She has an assortment of capes, fun accessories, and even comes up with her own superhero names! Many superheroes wear masks, so she may be onto something. As far as trick-or-treating goes, that’s an entirely different beast. Our neighborhood is home to several kids who are Jade’s age, 5–7 years old (the prime trick-or-treating age). While nothing has been set in stone as of this writing, there might be a coordinated effort to hold a “Halloween parade” where our kids can show off their Halloween costumes rather than everyone sticking their hands into the same bowls of candy. Another option, weather permitting, would be to set out bags of candy on tables on the front lawn or near the sidewalk. This would keep the candy divided and help limit
cross-contamination. Again, I don’t know exactly how something like this would play out, but it’s a great way to maintain the spirit of Halloween while exercising caution. One Halloween tradition I know we can still count on in our neighborhood are all of the awesome decorations! Every year, most of us go out of our way to create a fun, festive atmosphere for the kids. Some go spooky, some go scary, and some, like us, do a little of both. Like with everything else over the last six months, I know we’ll adapt and prevail. A lot of people are looking forward to Halloween and, like us, they don’t want to give it up. So, we’ll look for alternatives and make it work in the end. We’ll stay safe, have fun, and Halloween will live on!

Be Careful Before Having ‘Just 1 Drink’
elevate your blood alcohol concentration (BAC), but not all drinks are created equally. A shot of tequila, for example, will have a greater impact on your BAC than a glass of light beer. Let’s say you opt to take the Breathalyzer test. Even if you blow below the legal limit of 0.08%, the officer may determine you are driving impaired (maybe you registered a 0.03%). Even if your BAC is lower than the legal limit, it still has the potential to affect your driving. You may be unable to react as quickly as you otherwise would, or your eyesight may be slightly impaired. In any case, the officer may decide to arrest you. There is always the possibility that the Breathalyzer registered an incorrect BAC, or delivered a “false positive,” but these situations aren’t very common. This is one reason it’s so important to work with an attorney who specializes in DUI cases. If you were charged with a DUI, you may have questions and you want to make sure you’re treated fairly. The holiday season is fast approaching. Between Halloween and New Year’s Day, there are expected to be more parties and gatherings than any other time of the year — and that’s even when you factor in COVID-19. And where there’s a party or gathering, there’s a good chance alcoholic beverages will be served. But what if you just have one drink? Does that put you at risk? If you get behind the wheel of a car, the answer is yes. You might not feel intoxicated, but law enforcement might determine otherwise, as unfair as that might sound.
If a police officer pulls you over for “impaired driving” — even if you are 100% certain you are not impaired — they will be the one to make the call. Now, one drink isn’t likely to

Blogging Through the Pandemic
Blog Your Way Through the Pandemic
THE POWER OF WRITING
E veryone has faced trying times over the past few months. While many activities help get us through these challenges, blogging can be one of the most impactful. Writing enables you to express your feelings and experiences, and blogging allows you to share them with others. Here are a few reasons why starting a blog can be an important part of coping with the pandemic. Connect with your readers. At times, it can feel like you are alone in the world, especially now. However, your blog can reach people who feel the same as you or who have had similar experiences as you. Also, writing down your story will inspire other people, and they may even start their own blog. In this way, you not only help yourself and others, but you also spark change in their lives.
Meet new people. In addition to encouraging others, you might find a community of like-minded people through sharing your blog. You never know — from new readers and followers, you might learn of support groups to provide additional insights to your experiences. You can also find empathy and provide support to others. An online community can help you feel less isolated due to the pandemic or provide support through other challenging aspects of your life. Express your anxieties. Writing helps people cope with stressful experiences, and the pandemic has ushered a huge amount of uncertainty into their lives. Many people have felt afraid and anxious in the last eight months, and they continue to wonder what the future may hold. Your blog
gives you a chance to express those fears and ease your stress. Harvard Medical School studies have shown that writing your thoughts down helps you organize ideas and even regulate emotions. With less on your mind, your body can relax. Write out your experiences, no matter what situation you find yourself in. You will help other people and especially yourself.
