Shockwave & Laser E-Book- Lower Leg Injuries

THE ROLE OF SHOCKWAVE IN LOWER LEG RUNNING INJURIES

The first step when addressing tendon related pain is differentiating between tendinitis and tendinosis as they usually require different management. Physical management of tendon pain

Tendinitis is defined as inflammation of the tendon and results from micro-tears that happen when the musculotendinous unit is acutely overloaded with a tensile force that is too heavy and/or too sudden. 12

Symptoms can include localized pain, possible inflammation around the tendon, and pain with exertion.

Symptoms can last from days to 6 weeks depending on when treatment starts. 13

“Tendinitis can occur in any tendon. But it’s most common around shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and heels.” 14

“Most tendinitis can be treated with rest, physical therapy, and medicine to reduce pain.” 14

Tendinosis is a degeneration of the tendon’s collagen in response to chronic overuse; when overuse is continued without giving the tendon time to heal and rest, such as with repetitive strain injury, tendinosis results. 12

It is generally considered a chronic progression of tendonitis and is differentiated from tendinitis by histological changes in the tendon.
