Mowing, Stocking, and Spoiled Milk How My Summer Jobs Taught Me More Than Just Money

Remember those good old summer days — not the beach and sunbathing kind, but those when you hustled through various summer jobs as a kid and a teen? Okay, maybe those “good ol’ days” weren’t actually that great, but it’s funny looking back now. Nowadays, my sons venture into their summer gigs, and I’m thinking back to my early jobs, which were anything but glamorous but undoubtedly memorable. I started in the 4th grade; I wasn’t playing catch or biking around — I was the neighborhood landscaper (all I did was mow lawns, though). It all started when my dad decided he

College brought some stranger job adventures. One summer job at a milk factory — oh boy, was that a wake-up call! Handling spoiled milk in the dead of night with some of the weirdest hours imaginable? I’d start at dawn one week, working from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The following week, I’d wrap up at almost 5 a.m. after clocking in at around 7 p.m. But hey, I was 19, and bouncing back wasn’t too tough, plus the pay wasn’t bad. It kept my college motivation high; every time I hit a rough patch in studying, I’d remember the milk factory and hit the books even harder.

Watching Zach and Nathan pick up their summer jobs brings it all full circle. Zach teaches at a theater

wouldn’t pay me for mowing our lawn anymore. That’s when I figured, why not ask the neighbors? Turns out, they actually wanted to pay me! One lawn led to another, and soon, I was the go-to kid for a freshly cut yard. I was in it for the candy money and maybe some cool bike accessories — it was the perfect setup for a kid my age, especially since no one really needed their lawns mowed by the time school started back up.

camp and loves every minute, and Nathan, despite being swamped with hockey, always looks for work during his downtime. It’s great seeing them learn early life lessons, like figuring out what they don’t want to do later in life!

Those summer jobs were more than just money makers; they

taught me about independence, hard work, and finding what really drives you. Today, as a physical therapist, I’m thankful to

By the time I hit 8th grade, I was ready to upgrade from grass to groceries. I landed a job stocking shelves at a local store, needing my parents to sign off on a work permit since I was still under 16. Picture this: stocking shelves until midnight and then getting a ride home with Mom and Dad. One summer, I hit a bump — no one was hiring, and my folks actually thought I’d done something wrong because I was not working. Unheard of!

be passionate about my job — helping others feel and move better. But I’ll always look back fondly at those summers of mowing, stocking, and, yes, even dodging spoiled milk for teaching me some of life’s foundational lessons. So, what crazy summer jobs did you guys have? Let’s hear those stories! –Mike Ulmer

Anyone who has ever dealt with shoulder pain knows that it doesn’t clock out when it’s time to go to bed. In fact, for many, nighttime worsens the pain, turning what should be a restful period into hours of discomfort. We often encounter patients who struggle with how their shoulder pain affects their sleep. Finding the right sleeping positions can significantly affect pain management and quality of life. WHY DOES SHOULDER PAIN AFFECT SLEEP? Shoulder pain can stem from various sources, including rotator cuff injuries, bursitis, or arthritis. No matter the cause, the discomfort often intensifies when lying down. This increase in pain can be due to the pressure placed directly on the shoulder joint or the lack of movement, which can SLEEP BETTER TONIGHT 3 Tips to Reduce Shoulder Pain While You Sleep

elevating the upper body can help. Use pillows to create a gentle incline from the waist up. This position can decrease overall pressure on the shoulders and is especially helpful for those who experience acid reflux along with shoulder pain. Incorporating these sleeping tips and even gentle stretches before bed can help manage shoulder pain more effectively. However, it’s essential to address the underlying causes of shoulder pain. Physical therapy can be incredibly beneficial in treating shoulder issues by strengthening the muscles, improving flexibility, and reducing inflammation. Consider consulting with a physical therapist if your shoulder disrupts your sleep and daily life. Tailored exercises and personalized advice can help you regain comfort day and night. Remember, a good night’s sleep is crucial to healing and overall health.

Additionally, during sleep, we don’t have the luxury of consciously adjusting our posture to relieve pain as we do when awake. This can make certain sleeping positions painful and disrupt your sleep schedule. OPTIMAL SLEEPING POSITIONS FOR SHOULDER PAIN 1. On Your Back: This position is often considered ideal for shoulder pain patients. Sleeping on your back allows the shoulder to settle into a neutral position, reducing pressure and strain. It also evenly distributes body weight, preventing additional stress. 2. Use a Supportive Pillow: A pillow can make or break your sleep quality, especially if you suffer from shoulder pain. It is crucial to use a supportive pillow that keeps the neck aligned with the spine. 3. Prop Up With Additional Pillows: For some, slightly
