June’s Selections for the New Worlds Reading Initiative
This month, students will receive a final book to add to their home libraries. Children will have come to value that the books they received this school year have allowed them to embark on a variety of reading adventures. And their adventures are far from over. In addition to enjoying their summer reading books, children and families can reread favorite books from their home libraries together. Students will find there are still new ideas and interesting words to discover within their favorite books. Their favorite books can also lead them to their next reading adventure—children can use what they have learned about themselves as readers to help them decide what to read next! The following pages describe the specific books students will receive this month.

READING FOCUS: Kindergartners will receive a fun book that is appropriate for their growing independent reading skills this month. Families can celebrate children’s skills by asking questions about their reading as their confidence grows!

You Are (Not) Small Written by Anna Kang & illustrated by Christopher Weyant
In this charming story about opposites, two creatures go back and forth discussing who is small and who is big. When some new friends join the conversation, they offer new perspectives for everyone to consider. With minimal text on some pages, this book offers emerging readers an opportunity to move toward independent reading as they have fun thinking about comparing sizes.

An unexpected snowstorm causes trouble in the forest, and Zoey, accompanied by her cat Sassafras, is here to help! They attempt to rescue trapped caterfly eggs, and Zoey’s creative thinking skills are tested when they make a mistake and must figure out a solution before the baby caterflies hatch. This chapter book combines science and fantasy to keep readers engaged until the very last page.

Bear on the Loose! Written by Hilde Lysiak with Matthew Lysiak & illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff A bear is on the loose in Selinsgrove! They find clues like trash scattered across the back of a local store and a busted birdfeeder with scratch marks all over it, but not the bear itself. Hilde must find a way to crack this case before someone gets hurt!

When fourth graders Billy and Sam make a batch of super- secret slime for the upcoming auditions for the TV show America’s Got Science , everything goes horribly awry. Now they must find a way to stop their science experiment from turning all the adults in town into slime zombies. The scientific method is the basis for an exciting adventure in this fast-paced novel.

Stella Díaz Dreams Big Written & illustrated by Angela Dominguez
Stella wants to do it all. In the new school year, she becomes president of the Sea Musketeers, and joins several other clubs. But balancing her busy club schedule with schoolwork is quite difficult. There’s simply not enough time in the day! Stella will be in big trouble if she doesn’t get a handle on things, but she might just be able to make her dreams come true with the help of her friends.

In this award-winning novel inspired by the author’s childhood experiences, Mia Tang dreams of becoming a writer. But for now, when she’s not at school, fifth grader Mia helps out at the front desk of the Calivista Motel, where her family lives. Her parents manage the motel and clean the rooms, and sometimes they help new immigrants by allowing them to stay temporarily in empty rooms. But if the mean motel owner, Mr. Yao, finds out they’ve been letting people stay for free, they’ll lose their jobs AND their home. It will take all of Mia’s courage, kindness, and hard work to get through this year.

¡Narices! (Who Has a Funny Nose?) Written by Carmen Puebla Ordóñez The vivid photos in this book will lead young readers to compare and contrast the noses of various animals. From noses of animals they most likely have seen, such as the elephant and the cat, to more unusual ones like the echinoderm and the spiny softshell turtle, young readers will surely giggle at the silly-looking noses while they learn about them.

La luna, la luna (The Moon, The Moon) Written by Yanitzia Canetti & illustrated by Liusa Many different animals think about what the moon looks like, sitting high up in the sky. Crispin the Hedgehog sees a pillow, Rosado the Pig sees a golden fish, and Ema the cat calls the moon a poem! Each animal sees something different when it looks up at the moon. Readers will have fun thinking of what other things the moon might look like. This fun cast of animal characters makes for a great book for learning the names of animals with rhymes and colorful illustrations.

This hilarious friendship story is perfect for first graders. Told in three short stories with rhyming text, simple vocabulary, and colorful artwork, this is the just-right book to grow confidence in young readers!

The Magic School Bus is off on another adventure! This time Ms. Frizzle’s class is heading to the forest to learn about aerodynamics. The class is putting on a play of “The Three Little Pigs,” and the kids want to build a house for their play that even a super-powered fan can’t blow down. So Ms. Frizzle and her Magic School Bus take the class to learn how trees stand up to strong winds. After close observation, the students come up with a surprising house design that is strong as can be.

Sembrando historias: Pura Belpré: bibliotecaria y narradora de cuentos (Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré) Written by Anika Aldamuy Denise & illustrated by Paola Escobar Pura Belpré wore many hats throughout her life. She was a storyteller, a puppeteer, and even New York City’s first Puerto Rican children’s librarian. Pura used her gift of storytelling and love of reading to help children learn to visualize elements of stories as she told tales in both English and Spanish. With this picture book biography, children and their families will follow along as the iconic Pura makes her way to the top.

Whether reading familiar stories like “The Tortoise and the Hare,” or “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” or stories that are new to them, readers can notice common themes across the various fables. Each story illustrates the end with a proverb highlighting its moral.
