Dressing Up, Dancing Free, and Root Beer Cheers! A JOURNEY THROUGH NEW YEAR’S EVE MEMORIES AND MAYHEM
I hope you and your loved ones had an exciting New Year’s Eve back in 2023! If you don’t already know, my wife Jessica and I have never really been the type of parents to have a fake countdown for our kids. You know those Netflix programs that trick youngsters into thinking the midnight countdown is happening when, in reality, it’s not even past 9? We’ve never been a fan of those, and no matter the mayhem, we’ve always let our children stay up ‘til the clock strikes 12. I love the thrill of New Year’s Eve, and I want my kids to be part of it with me! I remember 2020; we were so excited for the coming year with no clue what would happen only a few months later. We celebrated that new year with a 1920s-themed party, and the whole family threw on pearls or suspenders and learned how to dance the Charleston to make it a real roaring 20s shindig. Every single one of us stayed up the whole night!
beer tasting, which we take very seriously. First, we head to Jungle Jim’s International Market for its wild atmosphere and its massive selection of craft sodas. Everyone gets to pick different root beers, and later that night, we have our soda “connoisseur-led” tasting and note fizziness, flavor, and so on before we pick our ultimate favorite. Another tradition we’ll never grow tired of is the ruckus we stir up when it’s finally midnight. We’ll all grab some pots and pans before running outside to bang on the pots so we can truly ring in the new year! Jessica has been doing this since she was a kid, and I couldn’t be more happy to partake in this tradition now with our family. When I look back at our New Year’s Eve celebrations, I think of the crazy late nights, family traditions, and even memories from when I was still a kid. I’ll never forget how big of a deal Y2K was when the new year of 2000 was headed our way. I was in school, living in West Lafayette, when everyone was worried that all the computers would crash, communication would be down, everyone’s money would vanish, and so on. All I remember about Y2K was that I was surprisingly calm! I felt that no matter what happened, I had my family and my close-knit community who would care for one another. Fortunately, the end of the modern world did not happen overnight, but it did spook everyone except me. I hope that if there ever were to be a similar Y2K scare, my own family would feel just as secure and at peace as I did back in 1999. Fortunately, for now, we all get to party late into the night with our endless root beers and newly learned Charleston dance moves. Jessica and I will continue to let our kids stay up until midnight and just accept that the next day will indeed be a doozy. In 2024, I look forward to continuing to work with my community and having the time of my life with my family. Happy New Year from the Brooks family to yours!
When it comes to traditions we do every New Year’s, there might be too many to count. One of our favorites, though, has to be our root

Our Team Tackles Common Dental Misconceptions BRUSHING MYTHS BUSTED! Did you know Jan. 25 is Opposite Day? With all the myths and misconceptions swirling online (and for decades), we thought we’d use this opportunity to share three dental myths you’ll never hear the Anderson Dental Care team say.
Food for Thought THE BENEFITS OF EATING AS A FAMILY In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the simple yet profound act of sharing a meal with family or friends. However, research suggests that eating together at least three times a week can significantly benefit overall health, particularly for children. Let’s delve into why this age-old tradition is more important than ever. PROMOTES HEALTHY EATING HABITS One of the most immediate benefits of family meals is you generally eat better. Families sitting down to eat together are more likely to consume a balanced homemade meal rich in essential nutrients like calcium and fiber. This is especially beneficial for children in their formative years who need these nutrients for growth and development. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT Eating together also helps in controlling weight more effectively. Home-prepared meals usually contain healthier ingredients and allow for better portion control. Mealtime structure also supports better eating habits, which can be a crucial factor in weight management for both adults and children. POSITIVE EFFECTS ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT Research suggests that eating dinner together positively affects child development. Children interact with adults and siblings, and conversations help them learn social skills, table manners, family values, and culture. EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING Family meals are not just about the food but also about spending quality time together. Enjoying a meal with loved ones allows family bonding and may even improve mental health. It contributes to fewer emotional problems and helps children feel loved, safe, and secure. EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS Mealtime conversations can be educational. Parents can discuss various topics, helping children expand their knowledge, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. This intellectual stimulation can be particularly beneficial for school-aged children. Sharing meals with family or friends is not just a social custom but a healthful practice with numerous benefits. The advantages are manifold, especially for children. So, make it a point to gather around the table for a meal at least three times a week. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you.
‘THE ORDER OF YOUR DENTAL ROUTINE DOESN’T MATTER.’ Trust us. It does matter! There has been plenty of debate on whether you
brush first or floss, and what about rinsing? Most people think the order doesn’t matter, but any dentist will tell you otherwise. The correct order is to floss, rinse, then brush!
When you floss, you’re releasing food, plaque, and
bacteria. If you were to brush, rinse, then floss, that gunk would stay in your mouth until the next time you brush your teeth. When you floss first and then rinse and brush, you can ensure that any food or bacteria released is actually removed.
‘DENTISTRY HAS TO BE EXPENSIVE.’ Dentistry does not need to be expensive! If you can keep your teeth healthy and regularly visit your dentist, you’re more likely to avoid serious dental issues and procedures later, which can be much more expensive. Insurance coverage, care plans, and various treatment options can help you save money and access dental care at an affordable price. The key is caring for your teeth now to prevent pricier, more intensive treatments later on. ‘BRUSHING HARDER CLEANS BETTER.’ For those brushing with force, you’re doing more harm than good. Brushing roughly with harsh bristles can damage your enamel and even your gums. Over time, brushing too hard could even cause gum recession. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth for two minutes twice a day! You’ll still get the clean you need without harming your teeth and gums. If you ever need clarification on any dental care rumor or trend, we’re here to set the record straight! You can call 513-231-7755 or visit our office for all the correct oral care information from the source.

A Journey Through January’s Unforgettable Past
January Milestones That Shaped History FASCINATING MOMENTS TO REMEMBER THIS JANUARY
January is a time for new beginnings, but the month itself holds plenty of history dating back thousands of years that we can’t ignore! As we dive right into the new year, let’s see what makes January a remarkable month. NEW YORK CITY’S FIRST NEW YEAR’S BALL DROP It was in January 1908 when New York City celebrated the new year with its iconic ball drop for the first time. While New Yorkers have been flocking to Times Square for New Year’s Eve ever since 1904, it wasn’t until 1907 that the world- famous ball drop ceremony first took place. At midnight ringing in 1908, the 700-pound ball of iron and wood covered with a hundred 25-watt light bulbs descended for the first time! CALIFORNIA’S FIRST ROSE PARADE IN 1890 When people were first planting their roots in California, new residents wanted to show the rest of the world how beautiful the West Coast weather and landscape were, even amid the depths of winter. So, the Valley Hunt Club decided to create the Rose Parade, which features horse-drawn carriages covered in colorful flowers. Club member Professor Charles F. Holder said, “In New York, people are buried in snow. Here our flowers are blooming, and our oranges are about to bear. Let’s hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise.”
The parade has grown exponentially with mechanical floats, marching bands, and endless blooming flowers televised for the whole globe to witness for themselves! THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN THE U.S. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. took place in January 1971. On Jan. 23, the temperature dropped all the way down to an unbelievably icy -80 degrees Fahrenheit at Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska. The weather was so cold that a person’s eyeballs would begin to freeze if they stayed outside for more than a few seconds!
THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE EVER IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE
Perhaps more shocking is that January is also when the hottest temperature was recorded in the Southern Hemisphere! As we experience the coldest time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, the other side of the world is going through the steamiest. This was certainly the case on Jan. 2, 1960, in Oodnadatta, Australia, when the temperature rose to 123 degrees Fahrenheit!
