Understanding the relationship between your payroll software provider and the government

T here are approximately 150 suppliers of payroll software in the UK, according to the list of ‘recognised’ providers on GOV.UK. There may be other providers not on this list but, since the introduction of the (now defunct) Payroll Standard in 2000, it has almost become the de facto starting point for any business looking for a new payroll software supplier. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has always been very clear that this list isn’t meant to represent any sort of kitemark or endorsement. But it fast became a shortlist for businesses looking to ensure that any future product would at least have been through some formal process to appear on the government’s list. It was commonplace during the tender process to provide a copy of the physical certificate issued by HMRC of the latest annual Payroll Standard achievement.
