BOILER & PRESSURE VESSEL CODE The INTERNATIONAL BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE sets safety rules for the design, fabrication and inspection of boilers, pressure vessels and nuclear power-plant components during construction. Its committee establishes maximum design and operating pressures while accounting for technological advances in materials, fabrication methods, inspection, certification and over-pressure protection. The rules are written to allow a margin for normal service deterioration, with regular addenda incorporating new designs, materials and field experience. Originating in 1914, the ASME BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE – the U.S. adoption of these standards – is now recognized in whole or in part by 49 states, numerous municipalities and territories, and every province of Canada.
