Be a Kid Again Day? SURE, WHY NOT
So, apparently, July 8 is “Be a Kid Again Day.” I didn’t know that was a thing, but once I heard it, I couldn’t stop thinking about one question: If I could go back to any time in my life, when would it be? It’s an easy answer for me: Sept. 1979 to June 1983, my high school years at St. Dominic Savio High School in East Boston. That’s when things really started to shift for me. I was still just a city kid growing up in a triple-decker, third floor, with my mom, dad, and sister. My grandparents lived on the second floor, straight from Italy, barely spoke any English, and the first floor was always rotating: aunts, uncles, cousins, you name it — tight quarters, not a lot of money, but a lot of love. My mom worked two jobs so I could go to Savio. It was an all-boys Catholic school, with small classes, and the students came from working-class families trying to give their kids a better shot. Most of us were rough around the edges, but we showed up. And if we didn’t, well, someone’s father made sure we did.
enjoying school. And man, those Friday night Savio dances? We’d pack the gym, girls from other schools would show up, there’d be a DJ, and for a few hours, we all thought we were in Saturday Night Fever . We danced like fools and didn’t care. It was awesome. Some of the guys I met back then are still my close friends today. And looking back now, I realize how pivotal those years were. That’s where I learned that doing well wasn’t something to be embarrassed about — it was something to aim for. So, yeah, July 8, Be a Kid Again Day? I’ll take it. If you get a minute, think about what your version of that looks like. And if you stumble across an old picture of yourself with big hair, even better.
Here’s the part that makes me laugh: That kid in the picture, sitting in his teacher’s Corvette? That’s me. And yes, I had hair. A lot of it. But I also had a smile that said I was enjoying myself. But that photo represents more than just a time when I had hair and a smile. It was a fork-in-the-road moment. Before high school, I was headed in the wrong direction, with the wrong crowd, and making the wrong choices. I am not proud of the trouble I got into back then. But my dad stepped in and said, “You’re going to Savio.” No debate. That was my wake-up call. He believed the structure would do me good, and it did! At Savio, things started to click. Sports were a big part of it. I played hockey, but it was more than that. I started working hard, doing well, and actually

GRILLED SHRIMP TACOS Inspired by PinchAndSwirl.com
INGREDIENTS Sauce
• 1/4 tsp ground cayenne pepper • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 pound shrimp,
• 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 1/4 cup sour cream • 2 tsp sriracha sauce Tacos • 10 9-inch bamboo skewers soaked in water for 15–30 minutes • 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 1/2 tsp kosher salt • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
peeled and deveined
• 8 corn tortillas • 1 cup finely
chopped green or red cabbage
• 1/2 cup finely chopped radish • 1 lime, cut into wedges • jalapeño peppers,
thinly sliced, optional
DIRECTIONS 1. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sour cream, and sriracha. Add water as needed to reach desired consistency. Set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk cilantro, salt, pepper, cayenne, and olive oil. Add shrimp and toss to coat. 3. Skewer the shrimp with bamboo skewers, adjusting so they’re evenly spaced to cook evenly, then set aside. 4. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. 5. Grill tortillas in a single layer for 30–45 seconds on each side until softened and lightly charred. Stack tortillas on aluminum foil and wrap to keep warm. 6. Grill shrimp skewers 2–3 minutes on each side until pink and just cooked through. Transfer to a platter. 7. To assemble tacos, fill a tortilla with 3 or 4 shrimp and sprinkle with chopped cabbage, radishes, and cilantro (if desired). Drizzle with the desired amount of sauce. Serve with lime wedges and sliced jalapeño, if desired.

ALLIED POWERS OUTWITTED THE ENEMY, ONE GAME AT A TIME When Monopoly Helped Win a War
You know Monopoly as the game that ruins friendships and sparks hourlong battles over Park Place. But during World War II, it played a much more significant and far braver role: helping Allied soldiers escape from German POW camps. Yes, really . In one of the most brilliant covert ops of the war, the British Secret Service turned Monopoly into a top-secret escape kit. Before this tactic, smuggling noisy paper maps without tipping off the guards was too risky, and getting caught could be fatal for prisoners. Enter silk — strong, weather-resistant, and, most importantly, silent. The British turned to John Waddington Ltd., the licensed Monopoly manufacturer in the UK, who also happened to be an expert in printing on silk. It was a match made in espionage heaven. Waddington didn’t just tuck maps into game boxes, though. In a locked room most employees didn’t know existed, craftsmen rigged Monopoly sets with tiny metal files, magnetic compasses, and even real currency hidden beneath the play money. Each
game was marked with a secret red dot on the Free Parking space — an insider’s clue for captured soldiers to look out for. Thanks to a clever partnership with the Red Cross, these “games” were slipped into POW camps as humanitarian aid packages. The guards thought they were passing along innocent entertainment. Meanwhile, inside the box were the tools to freedom. By the end of the war, over 35,000 POWs had escaped German camps — many with the help of these customized Monopoly sets. Though exact numbers are lost to history, Monopoly's role in those escapes is one of the war’s clever secrets. The mission was kept quiet for decades to preserve the strategy for future use. Today, the story reminds us that the simplest tools can sometimes carry out extraordinary missions. Next time you pass “Go,” just remember Monopoly once helped people pass barbed wire.
