The Most Wonderful Time of the Year College Baseball in Omaha
As excited as I was for Father’s Day, this time of year also signals one of my favorite pastimes in Omaha: the College World Series. Ever since I was a kid, we would pile into the car and take a trip to go watch the greatest games on dirt. For all its accolades, to me, Omaha is ingrained in the very fabric of college baseball. The two are inseparable, and Omaha is the ultimate destination for any team that wants to prove their worth and make their season one to remember. As a sports fan, it’s always hard to pass up watching the U.S. Open golf tournament, but we always make sure to find the balance in our house. If it’s going to be my special time to celebrate fatherhood, there’s no way I’d rather spend it than surrounded by friends and family watching the best college baseball teams in the country compete for the grand prize. This year was something special. While we did spend some quality time together on Father’s Day, nothing compared to our time together at this year’s games. I consider myself lucky when we’re all able to find the time in our busy schedules to hang out as a family, but this took the cake. Being able to get together with my wife and daughters and spend a day in the bleachers is a true blessing. There’s nothing quite like the smell of the ballpark, a bag of peanuts in your lap, and an ice-cold beverage in your hand. It truly is America’s pastime. There’s something about the College World Series that makes it stand apart for me. Getting to watch some of the world’s greatest players square off against one another is truly special. It’s been a big deal for our family for as long as I can remember. Even back when I was in junior high in the late ‘70s, we’d all drive from Kearney to Omaha to watch the games at Rosenblatt. We saw some of the names the game will never forget before they even had the major leagues on their radars. We sat there, eyes glued to the field, watching players like Will Clark, Barry Bonds, Paul Molitor, Frank Viola, and Roger Clemens. That’s the magic of college baseball, and that’s the reason why I love being able to share this time with my family. At the end of the day, that’s all any father could dream of. While my playing days are long behind me — just by a few years — there’s no place I’d rather be than soaking up the atmosphere of a ballpark and living the dream through this great group of athletes. Luckily, my family is right there with me. This year, just like every other year, I’m happy to be here in Omaha watching history be made.
