ICILS 2018 introduced the new construct
Since the 1990s, Slovenia has participated in all IEA studies with the exception of TIMSS 2019 and ICILS 2018. However, during the COVID-19 disruption, many questions arose about what we could learn from
Computational Thinking (CT). The international study center developed two innovative and successful test modules which many of the participating students
found both challenging and exciting. In ICILS 2023, the international study center developed two new modules, which were even more innovative and exciting. The expanded test material has made it possible to create a very detailed and thorough proficiency scale, which will be released on 12 November 2024. This scale, as well as the Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) scale and the scales developed in other IEA projects are, in my opinion as a literacy researcher, among the most important work done in IEA studies. These scales are used in the studies to understand and explain the competences of students at different score levels, but in a further perspective, they can be used by curriculum developers to advance learning goals and improve teaching material, by teacher educators to design teacher education, by researchers when interpreting secondary analyses of IEA data, and much more.
the ICILS 2013 data to better support remote schooling. Those data showed that the digital abilities of "digital natives" are often a myth and need further investigation. Since the 2013 cycle, there has been considerable debate about the digital divide, computer and information literacy, and whether a compulsory subject related to this domain is needed. The Ministry in Slovenia established a sector for the Digitalization of Education, and several national strategic documents covering this domain were prepared. Therefore, the 2023 results are expected to be of even greater interest than those from 2013. Not to forget, ICILS is the first comparative study on the use of ChatGPT and similar AI tools in education/schools, which has raised concerns in contemporary schooling debates.
