As a community bank, we believe in fostering community growth through volunteerism, sponsorship, and involvement. These community values shine bright in not only our Friends Club activities, but also in our members! Friends Club is made up of an amazing group of loyal customers who also foster growth in our community through supporting local organizations, engaging in historic preservation, providing mentorship to community youth, volunteering medical assistance, and so much more. Enter our Friends Club Member Spotlight! Each quarter, we will feature an employee-nominated Friends Club member who is fostering community growth through volunteerism and involvement. Hills Bank will donate $250 to a local non-profit on behalf of this member to show our support for the work they do in our community! This quarter, we sat down with Tina Koepnick from Iowa City, IA . A retired high school biology teacher, she volunteers as a side walker, horse lead, and team lead for classes at Miracles in Motion – an equestrian therapy organization in Swisher, IA that serves individuals with physical, cognitive, and social challenges, as well as those with chronic conditions, veterans, first Member Spotlight Tina Koepnick

responders, and caregivers. Tell us a bit about yourself Tina: How did you end up in Southeast Iowa? I grew up in central Iowa (Ankeny), and came to the University of Iowa, where I met my husband. He also became a high school biology teacher at City High, and we worked there together for 36 years. Ankeny was a lot smaller when I

grew up there, and the community bank was the lifeblood of the town. So as we put down roots here in Iowa City, that was something I sought out with Hills Bank. Why was banking with a community bank important to you? I love walking into the bank and seeing former students, or my

neighbors, or the employees that would come down every August and serve us breakfast at the schools. Hills Bank has really been there for me as my life has gone along: all our home mortgages, our children’s Penny Saver accounts, and even when my mom was reaching the end of her life – all the financial things you have to do were taken care of by the folks at Hills Bank.

Visit Miracles in Motion with Friends Club. Tour details on page 15!

Can you tell us what organizations you volunteer with? Along with Miracles in Motion, I’m very active in my church (Congregational United Church of Christ) as a moderator. Essentially, I work with boards across the organization that are doing independent work as something like a council leader or president. And of course I can’t stop teaching: I teach Sunday school every week because I just love the kiddos. How has volunteering with Miracles in Motion enriched your life? It gives me a pleasure and a feeling of accomplishment that you don’t get in many other ways. As a teacher, you see what your work does for the people who are growing and developing in your classes. But as a volunteer, I get to see the growth in the kids we serve as well as their families. It’s so rewarding to see people from all walks of life who are devoted to giving their loved ones this great experience.

Plus, I get free therapy [laughs]. You know, horse therapy has served me well in a lot of areas in my life. The last couple of years of my mom’s life were difficult, and this place was just far enough to get away and use my energies in a different manner – and get a lot of good feelings back again. Volunteering really helped me during that time. Who inspires you in our community? In my retirement years, I’m inspired by those people who have found areas to not only enrich their lives, but to enrich our community, whether through volunteering, charitable giving, activism, or other community work. These are retired

folks who could be relaxing and taking it easy, but they’ve really considered what they want to do with the time and money they have and want to use those things to make their communities better. What’s your favorite part of Friends Club? I just got in – and I’m very excited! I thoroughly enjoy connecting with people from different walks of life, and I just find it fascinating to sit down and have conversations about their lives and experiences. I’m looking forward to group tours and other experiences where I can meet people!

Thank you, Tina, for your volunteer work and for fostering growth here in Southeast Iowa. A $250 donation has been made to Miracles in Motion to show our support for the work you do in our community!

From Depot to Drugstor Williamsburg’s Living Histo

For some in Eastern Iowa, Williamsburg is better known for the outlet mall just off I-80 than the place itself a few miles down the road. But take some time to explore this charming town of 3,350 and you’ll find a place where history lives – and community thrives. It starts with Williamsburg’s town square, a green space crossed by walking paths and surrounded by storefronts old and new. Families meander along the sidewalks and paths connecting the gift and hobby shops, restaurants, banks, and the bustling local coffee spot, which shares a wall with the former Peterson Drug Company and the upstairs hospital/dentist’s office/maternity ward. It’s here and in the storefronts next door that the Williamsburg Historical Society (WHS) has set up shop. Part museum, part archive, and part genealogy office, the Society is committed to helping anyone who comes looking for information. “We started this work to prepare for the Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of Williamsburg in 2007, and it really evolved from there,” said Mary Miller, Vice President of the WHS. The WHS’s museum hosts a variety of unique memorabilia, most of it local to the area. School outfits, historical artifacts, military uniforms and materials dating back to the Civil War, and even a collection of Iowa County Indian arrows are among the items you’ll find.

16

Now, with the donation of the entire Iowa County genealogical and historical collection of Netha Meyer, the Society’s collection includes: • Over 33,000 obituaries • Thousands of family histories • Original research gathered through requests over the years • A fully searchable, digitized collection of Williamsburg and Marengo newspapers Along with its presence on the Williamsburg square, the WHS also maintains a representative train depot and one-room schoolhouse nearby. When you enter these

places, it feels like stepping into a building-sized time capsule. In the depot, handwritten timetables and punched train tickets are posted around the counter. An original bench features a flippable backrest (so those waiting for trains could see

them comfortably no matter which direction they were coming from). And an automatic telegraph machine writes out “Welcome to Williamsburg” in crisp, staccato taps. At the WHS museum, Mary says, kids on school field trips are fascinated by these sorts of tactile devices. Most have never seen a working typewriter or rotary phone before – some of them, not even a landline phone. On the other hand, the place stirs memories for those of a certain age on class reunion tours. In the maternity ward, a set of metal cribs sits next to a brass-colored baby incubator that looks more like a bread box. It’s evocative of a time that feels distant but is still in living memory. “I’ve had people tell me, ‘I had to stay in this ward for a month as a baby.” Mary said. “And I tell them, ‘You probably stayed right here.” It’s a place that brings the past to life, connecting generations of Williamsburg residents through shared spaces and memories. And people like Mary would love to give you a tour.

Retiring in a Rocky Market by the Hills Bank Wealth Management Team

your best not to let emotions dictate when or if you sell assets, preventing the potential of turning short-term volatility into lasting damage. Time Withdrawals Strategically There are ways to time your withdrawals strategically to help your most volatile investments rebound with the market; seek advice from a professional before making any drastic decisions to your investment or withdrawal strategies. In general, however, to help protect the wealth you’ve built, one approach is to delay withdrawing from the most affected parts of your portfolio; these are the assets that lose value quickly during downturns like individual stocks, stock mutual funds, and ETFs. If you need to withdraw, do so from the least-affected parts of your portfolio first. Things like cash or money market funds, and fixed- income investments, like bonds or bond funds, tend to be more stable than stocks and don’t fluctuate as dramatically during downturns. Using these funds for your living expenses gives your stock-based investments time to recover, rather than forcing you to sell them at a loss.

If you’re getting ready to retire – or already enjoying retirement – seeing your account balances drop stirs up anxiety, uncertainty, even fear. Fortunately, there are things you can do to regain a sense of control and stay on track. While market downturns are unsettling, there are strategies you can use to lessen the impact on your retirement. The key is knowing how to respond with purpose, not panic. It’s not about drastic moves; it’s about flexibility, staying informed, and protecting the long-term health of your retirement. Risks of Selling in a Down Market Before taking any action, it is important to understand the risk of selling investments during a downturn. Sometimes investors react to a market downturn by selling stocks, trying to protect what they’ve saved. But by selling early, you lock in a low value that might have been temporary. If you’ve been investing for years, your portfolio could include a lot of long- term growth. When you sell during a dip, you take a hit and miss out on a chance for those investments to recover when the market rebounds. Do

Utilize the Bucket Strategy The bucket strategy divides your retirement savings into three time-based “buckets” – each designed to serve a different purpose based on when you’ll need the money and your risk tolerance. Bucket 1: Short-Term (0–2 years)

Bucket 2: Mid-Term (3–5 years) This middle bucket is meant to be more stable than stocks but offer a little more growth than cash. It serves as a bridge between your short-term needs and long-term goals. Use this bucket for near-future spending that doesn’t need to be accessed immediately.

Bucket 3: Long-Term (5+ years) This is where you keep the investments with the most potential to grow—but also the most potential to swing during downturns. Try not to touch this bucket during volatile periods; let it recover and grow over the years, replenishing the other buckets as needed when the market is stronger.

This bucket gives you easy access to funds when you need them, without having to sell investments during a market dip. Having funds for essential expenses in this bucket helps you ride out short-term volatility. Use this bucket for daily expenses and immediate income needs.

During a market dip, you can pull from your short- or mid-term buckets to avoid selling long-term investments at a loss.
