Can you tell us what organizations you volunteer with? Along with Miracles in Motion, I’m very active in my church (Congregational United Church of Christ) as a moderator. Essentially, I work with boards across the organization that are doing independent work as something like a council leader or president. And of course I can’t stop teaching: I teach Sunday school every week because I just love the kiddos. How has volunteering with Miracles in Motion enriched your life? It gives me a pleasure and a feeling of accomplishment that you don’t get in many other ways. As a teacher, you see what your work does for the people who are growing and developing in your classes. But as a volunteer, I get to see the growth in the kids we serve as well as their families. It’s so rewarding to see people from all walks of life who are devoted to giving their loved ones this great experience.

Plus, I get free therapy [laughs]. You know, horse therapy has served me well in a lot of areas in my life. The last couple of years of my mom’s life were difficult, and this place was just far enough to get away and use my energies in a different manner – and get a lot of good feelings back again. Volunteering really helped me during that time. Who inspires you in our community? In my retirement years, I’m inspired by those people who have found areas to not only enrich their lives, but to enrich our community, whether through volunteering, charitable giving, activism, or other community work. These are retired

folks who could be relaxing and taking it easy, but they’ve really considered what they want to do with the time and money they have and want to use those things to make their communities better. What’s your favorite part of Friends Club? I just got in – and I’m very excited! I thoroughly enjoy connecting with people from different walks of life, and I just find it fascinating to sit down and have conversations about their lives and experiences. I’m looking forward to group tours and other experiences where I can meet people!

Thank you, Tina, for your volunteer work and for fostering growth here in Southeast Iowa. A $250 donation has been made to Miracles in Motion to show our support for the work you do in our community!
